AES SYSTEM – FOR WHOSE INTEREST CRONIES OR CONSUMERS?

‘It is used in 55 countries, the system targets speeding motorists and aims to reduce accident rates, road fatalities and generally improve safety on roads but the manner it is rolled out in those countries have been after much debate, transparency, accountability, good governance and a media blitz on safety first programs for the nation before punitive sanctions put into place!

Here it was done in a cloak and dagger manner when two companies were rumored to have been picked and the nation not told what was so special about these two and why there was no open and transparent tender exercise?

But that is not new in Malaysia is it?’ – Dr Jacob George

AES SYSTEM – FOR WHOSE INTEREST CRONIES OR CONSUMERS?

FLASHBACK BUDGET:
80. To attract more skilled workers into the country, the Government will establish a Talent Corporation, which will identify skill shortages in key sectors, and attract and retain necessary skilled human capital. While we are faced with the shortage of skilled manpower, there are more than 700,000 Malaysians currently working abroad. The Talent Corporation is expected to spearhead Malaysia’s initiative to attract the Malaysian Diaspora back to the country to contribute to the country’s skilled manpower needs.

But really we do not need to put aside millions of public funds into such an effort which is a waste of public funds which could be channeled into our ailing healthcare system?

And we do not need these so called talents who have already left deserting what they thought was a sinking ship and once again for political expediency sake – we award great platitudes to such creatures and forget those who have stayed behind to work in tough, thankless and rough terrain to uplift the nation!

But Malaysia is really talented!

Just look at the one sided Toll, Water, Power, Garbage concessionaires – @ a master piece in legal drafting which assures a private entity real and sure profits at any costs rewriting ethical, business and management principles!

Or where RM2 companies newly set up win multi million dollars worth projects in areas one has no expertise on?

Sounds familiar?

In fact, a comprehensive look at our privatization program is a classic that we can export to government’s abroad but then their public and private institutions, media and governance watchdogs especially those heading appropriations, acquisitions, mergers, takeovers select committees will make certain it will never take flight!

But what I want to talk about this morning is rather the ingenious way we intend to screw Malaysian motorist to finance certainly private interests and not safety in introducing various facets under the controversial Automated Enforcement System (AES)!

Many with vested interest have been on a lookout at ingenious methods of generating income for themselves and their politically connected cronies and so the AES has been in the pipeline for several years awaiting its roll out!

It is used in 55 countries, the system targets speeding motorists and aims to reduce accident rates, road fatalities and generally improve safety on roads but the manner it is rolled out in those countries have been after much debate, transparency, accountability, good governance and a media blitz on safety first programs for the nation before punitive sanctions put into place!

Here it was done in a cloak and dagger manner when two companies were rumored to have been picked and the nation not told what was so special about these two and why there was no open and transparent tender exercise?

But that is not new in Malaysia is it?

According to reliable sources politically connected predators are already lobbying hard and with gusto ‘taking no prisoners’ in attempting to be part of the conduits to be included in this cash cow that is expected to bleed careless and stupid Malaysians still hell bound in driving their cars through red lights, driving recklessly and negligently together with others just unfortunate when caught in speed zones that are stupidly placed without any comprehensive data and reasons where in a zone where there is nether a dog, cat or cow a 50 kph or worst where within a few meters of each other there are three speed signs running from 50, 90 and 110 kph?

And within that perimeter certainly several possibilities to spring an entrapment!

More importantly while these politically connected predators  are slugging it out to get a piece of the speculated billion ringgit win fall I cannot but ask is this all for consumer safety or because certain political punters have already done the mathematics on this one?

After all in 2005 alone there was RM145 million worth of summonses for speeding were issued.

And I am advised that was from ad hoc police stakeouts which last some two or three hours so can you imagine if this was a comprehensive program undertaken around the clock?

Malaysians will have to either decide to boycott the highways which will serve not its purpose since it will become extremely expensive to travel on one with the convoluted speed limits, cameras and traffic operations in addition to the high toll already paid on a highway which in my opinion is overrated and extremely dangerous in several stretches and with a growing number of breakdowns and foreign bodies littering – it make driving dangerous!

My argument is why must I use to highway and make a few politically connected animals billionaires at my expense, I will use the train instead!

Got my drift then join me!

PRE 2011 LAMENTATIONS AT 54 – THOUGHTS AND REFLECTIONS

‘Life was tough, real tough and still is but because of my FAITH and GOD’s PROVIDENCE I continue to prevail! – Dr Jacob George

PRE 2011 LAMENTATIONS AT 54 – THOUGHTS AND REFLECTIONS

I’m 54.  I come from very poor and humble beginnings! Life was real tough and I never had all those that are ‘part and parcel’ of those today growing up. Early childhood, post my grandmother’s death in 1965 in Sungei Petani, Kedah and teenage in Butterworth, Penang was tough and so was growing. I’ve worked, hard, since I was 17. University and post graduate education was through God’s Grace and through scholarships! Have being a victim of wicked men, women and betrayals more than once in my career and life but God has being loving and kind!

I still put in 80-hour weeks doing a ‘thankless job’ and haven’t called in sick in seven or eight years. I do not have a salary for what I do. I didn’t inherit my job (thanks to Godfathers or a Politician/Prime Minister father!) I worked to get where I am and real hard. Given the economy and the manner the nation’s wealth is abused, there’s no retirement in sight! (Pun intended!)

I’m tired of seeing politically connected idiots holding powerful positions with vulgar salaries, politicians and those who should not be in the grab for construction projects pilfering and making huge millions because of their political connections or positions in the country or worst, because they are married to powerful men and women in the country! I am angry when millionaires are made of those ‘lazy, greedy and stupid’ who do not want to work hard but want to live in the ‘fast lane’ through a subsidy mentality! I get angry when politicians and others live lifestyles beyond their legal means and it is accepted as a norm? And when I am told I should not question where that wealth comes from?

I’m tired at seeing hypocrites (some very learned men and women) speaking and delivering homilies and sermons as if they are morally upright and God fearing individuals! Individuals who are plain hypocrites an embarrassment for living and leading a double life until caught and if then to see they spin their way with justifications that are blatant misrepresentations and outright lies! More so when they say they fear GOD but live lives that are an abomination!

I’m tired of being told that we have no money for healthcare, education, subsidized housing for the poor and needy, or subsidies for the poor and marginalized, for scholarships for the country’s brilliant students more so when they are from poor families and monies are used for purchasing billions ringgit toys which are not maintained or worst unused resulting in cronies and contractors laughing all the way to the bank! I am upset when those rich abuse and steal from the poor when it comes to housing, healthcare and scholarships/education!

I’m tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming or not question various issues that revolves around media manipulations, good governance, transparency, accountability, abuse of power or corruption which no one is allowed to debate citing them being ‘sensitive’ but to whom may I ask?

I’m tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease so the same with others with Aids and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses or a sex companion force their way in while they tried to fight it off?

I’m tired of hearing spoilt but wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of both parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting caught. I’m tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor.

I’m real tired of people who don’t take responsibility for their lives and actions. I’m tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination or those colonial masters of the 50’s or the west big-whatever for their problems.

Yes, I’m damn tired. But I’m also glad to be 54. Because, mostly, I’m not going to have to see the world these people are making. I’m just sorry for my children and perhaps, God willing my grandchildren in the future! May GOD ALMIGHTLY HELP THEM!

CONSUMER – NESTLE CHEATED ME OF A BICYCLE PRIZE!

– ‘a no nonsence tolerating Minister!’

‘I will alert the Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism, Ismail Sabri Yaacob about this matter so that a comprehensive enquiry can be held!

The business industry must take reasonable care and precaution when organizing such promotions in the future!

It is stupid to claim that there was an ‘error in the communication of the mechanics of the contest!’

We can understand if the organizers were a butch of 10 year of school children but for a multi billion dollar – multinational organization to claim such is regrettable and it is pertinent that policymakers address such irresponsible and inappropriate industry behavior with the sternest rebuke in the public interest!’  – Dr Jacob George CASSA CHIEF

CONSUMER – NESTLE CHEATED ME OF A BICYCLE PRIZE!

‘Dear Dr. George,

Thank you for allowing me to address this consumer problem to Malaysia’s leading consumer advocacy group – the Consumer Association of Subang and Shah Alam, Selangor. (CASSA).

Sometime in mid November 2010, I bought a “ Mat Cool” ice cream from an ice cream vendor and upon finishing the ice cream noticed on the ice cream stick the following :-

“Menang 1 basikal LeRun Prius. Tebus sebelum 1/12/2010”

I immediately called Nestlé’s Customer Service on 29th November 2010 and spoke to one Ms.  Azizah Ramly who said the I must have another ice cream stick with the words “ Kawan” to qualify for the bicycle. Not satisfied with the explanation I asked to speak to a higher authority.

Ms. Norlida, the Customer Service manager called me and told the same thing that I must have another stick with the words “Kawan” to qualify for the bicycle.

I was still not satisfied and I demanded for my bicycle and asked to whom can I speak to claim the price, Ms Norlida said Ms Fatimah Tul from the Legal Department will call me but no one called and thus on 3rd December 2010 I called and asked to speak to Ms Norlida of customer service to enquire and was told the that she was on leave and on 8th December Encik Mohd Shah Bin Hashim, who claims to be from the legal department, called to explain the mechanics of the contest.

He admitted that there was an error in the promotion and they have written to all authorities to rectify their error.

As a  consumer I bought a “Mat Cool” ice cream and discovered that I have won a bicycle as printed on the ice cream stick and upon claiming the price, all sorts of excuses are being told and I take it that this amounts to cheating.

After Mr Mohd spoke to me he even sent me an SMS, part of which reads as:

“As explained to you, there was an error in the communication of the mechanics of the contest and we have done everything that is necessary to correct the error…………………… Please accept our apologies for the error in the communication”

As a consumer how are we to know the error and not keeping up to their promise I would strongly say that this amounts to cheating the public.

The above ice cream stick is safely with me as proof of purchase and winning.

Hope CASSA can take up the case with Nestle and hope to hear from your good office soon.

Thank You

Saykeran’

CASSA CHIEF- ALLEGED MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE CASE GOES TO DG.

‘As far as the Klang GH case is concerned, an official complaint has been forwarded to the proactive and no nonsense Director General of Health Services in Malaysia, Dr Ismail Merican and I am certain that a comprehensive and exhaustive investigation would be conducted leaving no unturned stones!’ – Dr Jacob George

CASSA CHIEF- ALLEGED MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE CASE GOES TO DG.

It is a growing fact that medical negligence is increasing the world over despite landmark legal sanctions all over!

In Malaysia, it is no different with the number of allegations increasing and it will since we have poorly trained foreign and local doctors working in Malaysia!

The situation becomes more critical when today’s housemen who come in the thousands are a pale shadow and certainly ‘inferior and in my mind pathetic’ in comparison to their seniors who walked the corridors of various hospitals in the 60’s to late 80’s who were made up of stronger and sterner stuff!

We have many reasons for this from Medical Universities with poor standards, too many housemen, indifference, lack of dedication, fatigue, lack of professionalism, extremely bad medical training, lack of supervision from seniors, lack of retraining, lack of periodic exams conducted both written and practical to assess skills and education of all stakeholders in the field of medicine by their superiors so that only those skilled will be allowed to manage cases and others told to tag until they reach a competent level assessed by a qualified senior!

To make matters worse, we have ‘cry babies’ and ‘over anxious parents’ who want their ‘babies’ to be treated with ‘silk gloves’ during training and house job!

If that is not bad enough there are others who feel that we should not discipline those who screw up!

I feel that we must make certain that those who ‘screw up’ must never manage a case again until such time they have been reassessed by a competent superior respected in that field!

As far as the Klang GH case is concerned, an official complaint has been forwarded to the proactive and no nonsense Director General of Health Services in Malaysia, Dr Ismail Merican and I am certain that a comprehensive and exhaustive investigation would be conducted leaving no unturned stones!

We must be patient and fair and allow the matter to be investigated without interference!

As I indicated, in all fairness when the report is out we will address and give it the same exposure in this blog in the public interest!

I am certain the learned DG will also address my appeal to revamp the Malaysian Medical Council so that time and speed will be the essence of resolving all complaints!

HOLISTIC HEALTHCARE – JACOB’S 8 PRINCIPLES!

‘ At the end of the day, it is all about ‘a duty of care’ towards one who comes before us to seek treatment or assistance!

At the end of the day, it is all about dedication, caring, and professionalism!

At the end of the day – it is not just about that person (s) living or dying but most importantly, whether we have done our level best for them, which includes even in ‘a crisis situation!’ – Dr Jacob George.

JACOB’S 8 PRINCIPLES IN HOLISTIC HEATHCARE MANAGEMENT!

1. Information Disclosure. Consumers have the right to receive “accurate, easily understood information” and help making informed health care decisions. This includes information about physician education and board certification, experience performing certain procedures and consumer satisfaction rates.

2. Choice of providers and plans. All health plans should have a network large enough “to assure that all covered services will be accessible without unreasonable delay.” It includes access to consultants, specialist, gynecologists and certified nurse midwives for “routine and preventative women’s health care services.”

3. Access to emergency services. Health plans should pay for emergency care “when a consumer presents to an emergency department with acute symptoms of sufficient severity—including severe pain—such that a ‘prudent layperson’ could reasonably expect the absence of medical attention to result in placing that consumer’s health in serious jeopardy.”

4. Participation in treatment decisions. Physicians and other health care professionals should discuss all treatment options, including the option of no treatment at all, discuss the use of advance directives and abide by the decisions made by their patients. Health plans also should disclose to consumers facts that could influence advice or treatment decisions, such as methods of compensation or ownership of health care facilities. They also should not have “gag clauses” in their provider contracts and should be prohibited from penalizing or seeking retribution against health care professionals who advocate on behalf of their patients.

5. Respect and nondiscrimination. Discrimination in the delivery of health care or in the marketing and enrollment practices of a health plan should be forbidden on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, genetic information or source of payment.

6. Confidentiality of health information. Consumers have the right to communicate with health care providers in confidence, and to have the confidentiality of their health care information protected.

7. Complaints and appeals. Consumers have a right to a “fair and efficient process for resolving differences” with health plans or providers, including “a rigorous system of internal review and an independent system of external review”.

8. Consumer responsibilities. Consumers should be encouraged to take responsibility for their health and exercise, avoid smoking and eat a healthy diet. Consumers also have the responsibility to become involved in making health care decisions, to carry out agreed-upon treatment plans, and to recognize the reality of risks and limits of the science of medical care and the human fallibility of the health care professional.
