‘The pertinent question – are we all learning a lesson or two in this saga or is it still ‘business as usual’ where we continue to sleep with the enemy @lobbyists, predator contractors, corrupt politicians and cronies who only are obsessed at getting their dirty hands and evil hearts on to the millions in payouts?’ – Dr Jacob George
CONSUMERIST – GOING NUCLEAR IS SLEEPING WITH A PROSTITUTE!
Perhaps, just perhaps, the Japanese tragedy will open up the eyes of governments who want to fast track the building of nuclear projects in their backyards!
It does not help when you have lobbyists, predator contractors, corrupt politicians and cronies waiting on the sidelines to make a huge financial killing through commissions and kickbacks!
It is three to five times more expensive than other technologies!
The chance for cost over-runs more than five times!
The cost in decommissioning is unthinkable!
The cost in storing waste and addressing disasters shocking and alarming!
A nation and her neighbors can be brought down to their knees if calamity strikes and they will and have numerous times!
Are we ready?
So I cannot but laud at least temporarily news that China stopped approving new nuclear projects and Hong Kong began releasing real-time data on radiation levels from 10 monitoring stations as Asian governments responded in the aftermath of Japan’s earthquake.
Interestingly – China’s premier Wen Jiabao with a straight smiling face stated that approvals of new plants will be suspended, including those in the pre-development phase!
Was it the truth or was it plain fiction or crude politics, news managing and logistics maneuvering?
In the backdrop and not far were Japanese workers and strangely workers of a utility company trying desperately to cool uranium and plutonium fuel rods at reactors that nuclear experts overseas say conclusively to be emitting radiation!
Worst this was not the all – as – the global village began screening food and other exports, airline passengers Japan.
The seriousness of it all can be seen as China began giving updates on radiation levels more than once a day in 42 cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, since the crisis started!
In addition to this – Hong Kong Observatory has started providing real-time ambient gamma radiation levels from its 10 monitoring stations over the Internet, according to a statement on the government.
Our neighbors Singapore through their proactive well equipped and managed – Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority began testing seafood, fruits, vegetables and meat exported from Japan for radioactive contaminants after March 11!
The pertinent question – are we all learning a lesson or two in this saga or is it still ‘business as usual’ where we continue to sleep with the enemy @lobbyists, predator contractors, corrupt politicians and cronies who only are obsessed at getting their dirty hands and evil hearts on to the millions in payouts?
