CONSUMERIST – PENGUNDI MALAYSIA TAK NAK INDUSTRI RADIOAKTIF

Dato Jacob George

Malaysia must remember that no country has yet implemented a long-term solution to this problem, although Finland and the United States have plans to build repositories deep underground in areas identified for their geological stability.

Malaysians today say – ‘Tak Nak Industri Radioaktif! Tak payah bincang, tak payah runding, tak payah buang masa!’ – Dr Jacob George

CONSUMERIST – PENGUNDI MALAYSIA TAK NAK INDUSTRI RADIOAKTIF

Silly when policymakers are so ‘stubborn and stupid’ eagerly sucking up to the millions if not billions promised by lobbyists and industry for kickbacks, research and development and political and personal funding?

But policymakers the world over are rethinking except Malaysia (?) – following the absolute devastation caused by the earthquake measuring magnitude 8.9 and the ensuing tsunami that shook Japan recently!

Today the the world has suddenly begun to turn its back on the nuclear power industry and radioactive generating industry!

NONEThanks to the Japanese disaster with that country’s reactors adding such widespread panic in the wake of a disaster which alone is the worst thing the country has dealt with since WW2, people around the globe are waking up to the fact that nuclear and supporting radioactive generating industry is not the way forward.

For years now the nuclear boys have been fighting for this terrifying technology to come into full force in many countries that includes in Europe and the developing world in Asia offering all kinds of perks to politicians, policymakers and manipulating media, research data and findings!

In many countries they have succeeded!

Corruption pays millions!

At the same time – over the last few decades, nuclear power has been seen as prohibitively expensive with no new reactors built in the UK since the 1980s, as accidents, spiraling decommissioning costs and the problem of nuclear waste eroded enthusiasm. Currently, the UK relies on atomic energy for nearly 20% of its electricity, yet all but one of its existing power stations are due to close by 2023. Most hoped that that would be the end of it.

Unfortunately however, when soaring oil and gas prices, dwindling fossil fuel reserves and the pressure to tackle climate change was met with nuclear money bags, many Governments, UK included renewed its support for the alternative energy source, giving the go-ahead for eight new nuclear power stations, with plans for a total of 10 new reactors installed by 2024.

While much of the way nuclear behaves under extreme circumstances is unknown – as has been horrifyingly showcased in Japan recently – radioactive waste is one of the biggest problems the nuclear industry faces.

Here, the real fear lies in the small proportion of nuclear waste that is “high-level waste” or waste that is so radioactive that it generates heat and corrodes all containers known to humankind – no man-made container could survive the tens of thousands of years it will take for high-level waste to decay to safe levels.

We know what happened at Bukit Merah Asia Rare Earth disaster outing!

Scarily, this waste will cause death within a few days to anyone directly exposed to it.

In the UK this high-level radioactive material accounts for less than 0.3% of the total volume of nuclear waste, but contributes about half the total radioactivity.
kampung baru bukit merah

Malaysia must remember that no country has yet implemented a long-term solution to this problem, although Finland and the United States have plans to build repositories deep underground in areas identified for their geological stability.

This solution is one of those under consideration in the UK, even though it is not certain that this is safe.

The Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam Selangor (CASSA) believes there should be increased investment in clean, renewable technologies that would create more green  jobs rather a new generation of nuclear power stations and industry that generates radioactive waste and threatens our lives and the environment for several generations!

CASSA says No to Malaysian policymakers, politicians and contractors being conduits for this despicable industry!

CASSA say ENOUGH of academicians, market research companies doctoring studies and manipulating data!

CASSA says that time right for a higher duty of care, legislation on safety and health standards, code of conduct where conduits do not design, fabricate and manipulate questions and materials deliberately misleading Malaysian voters and population!

CASSA SAYS ‘TAK NAK INDUSTRI RADIOACTIF!’

CONSUMERIST – JOINING CAP/SAM TO SAY NO TO BUKIT MERAH AND LYNAS!

Dato Jacob George

The Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam Selangor (CASSA) fully supports MR S M Mohamed Idris, President of the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) and Sahabat Alam Malaysia’s (SAM) statement!

His statement reads:

‘The Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) Director Raja Abdul Aziz Raja Adnan has said that the AELB was seeking the help of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to select experts to study the safety of the Lynas rare earth plant project in Gebeng.

Firstly the IAEA was set up to promote the use of nuclear energy and to act as a policeman to check whether a country is conducting a covert nuclear weapons programme.

In fact the IAEA helps developing countries in their plans to build nuclear power plants.

As such it lends support to the nuclear industry and its expansion world wide.

Given its mandate it would be fanciful to imagine that the IAEA will be in a position to put together an international panel of ‘independent experts’ to carry out a conclusive study.

Similarly the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) was set up under the Atomic Energy Licensing Act 1984 (Act 304) to regulate the use of nuclear power.

AELB’s role is therefore to support and promote the development and use of nuclear power and its related activities in the country.

AELB had issued the licence to Lynas to build and operate the rare earth processing plant, fully aware that radioactive thorium waste will be produced. AELB will even open a branch office in Gebeng.

Secondly the government is planning to build two nuclear reactors. This ties in neatly that there is a high probability that the government will use the thorium as fuel for the planned nuclear reactors.

Bearing in mind that Malaysia is not in favour of the international centralised uranium or plutonium bank, this will be a golden opportunity to have access to limitless quantities of thorium right in our backyard to fuel the planned nuclear reactors.

This will also mean that the reactors would most likely be sited in the Kuantan area or nearby. (A recent press report revealed that one of the nuclear plants will be based in Temerloh).

Thirdly, thorium can be used to produce uranium. Thorium can be combined with americium to make portable nuclear reactors.

However, americium is reportedly as toxic and hazardous as plutonium if not more. It will be a deadly and terrible mistake if we take this path to produce nuclear power plants.

So before we consider an international panel of ‘independent experts’ the government must come clean on why it allowed Lynas to build and operate the rare earth plant and why is Lynas so confident that the one month review of its plant will reconfirm its safety.’

CONSUMERIST – SIAPA ITU ‘ALEX DAN HAMZAH’ IN LAWLESS SELANGOR?

Dato Jacob George

‘It is embarrassing in Malaysia’s when its alleged ‘most developed state’ has a cocktail of politicians, businessmen, thugs and individuals of the underworld committing acts of crime right in broad daylight!

When relevant authorities are alleged to turn a blind eye at crimes against the people and state!

I am told that TTDI Development has made several police reports so what is next?

I will alert the Premier, the Home Minister, the IGP,the Selangor MB and the MACC Chief to look into these allegations!

Are we heading on a downward spiral, a free fall that governance and public interest is totally sacrificed at the altars of greed, profits and crime!’ – Dr Jacob George

CONSUMERIST – SIAPA ITU ‘ALEX DAN HAMZAH’ IN LAWLESS SELANGOR?

It was not happening in the jungles of West or East Malaysia let alone in the rural outskirts but spot on at Jalan Monfort in Bandar Raya Shah Alam Selangor near TTDI Jaya at U2!

Unbelievable but true!

A group of organized criminals has been blatantly stealing sand and dumping lorry loads of rubbish at a plot of land in TTDI Jaya, Shah Alam belonging to TTDI Development.

Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam (CASSA) found out about the operations when they received several complaints and tip offs from residents and sources!

On the issue of river sand being stolen CASSA investigated for almost a year and found that this illegal activity is being carried out in broad daylight here along the Damansara river.

This shows their contempt for authorities!

Heavy machinery, including excavators and lorries, have been going in and out of the area daily.

The same well organized group had also broken into the fencing of an adjacent development owned by TTDI Development Sdn Bhd!

Here they were also stealing earth from that area and CASSA alerted the company of the trespass to their property.

CASSA investigations showed the group was regularly bringing in 15-20 lorries a day and had charged developers in the surrounding areas RM70-120 to cart away the rubbish.

They are also dumping rubbish into rivers after excavating river sand!

This is also taking place in many areas in Selangor according reliable sources which includes section 23 just around a Chinese cemetery overlooking a highway!

CASSA had alerted the police, the Shah Alam city council (MBSA) and several federal ministries!

We do not understand why neither MBSA or the home ministry has taken any action on the  well connected and organized culprits!

Who gave them license to do this? It looks like Selangor is lawless!

We are advised the group is well organized and believed that they are linked to gangsters and the underworld.

Their actions are causing river pollution and some residents are even threatening to take the law into their hands and destroy their machinery and this is a response that is unfortunate when one attempts to hunt with the  hounds andrun with the hares!

Yesterday in the middle of a press conference at the site CASSA President Dr Jacob George was threatened by the group who had  arrived with several lorry loads to dump at the site!

When they realized their futile attempts and the presence of journalists they handed over a mobile to him where the voice on the other end him attempted to bribe him and not to expose the illegal operations.

It was alleged in the conversation that they had “taken care” of the authorities, insinuating that they had been paid off to close an eye to their illegal business and why was the CASSA  Chief being so difficult!

CASSA is bringing this matter to the Home Minister, the MACC and the relevant authorities!

CONSUMERIST – CM TAIB MAHMUD SHOULD STAY – PERIOD!

Dato Jacob George

‘Both Sarawak statements articulates a strong desire for state sovereignty and independence from the many hurdles and shackles Peninsula is facing not forgetting the recent drastic racialist hype of threats, political dominance, warnings, police reports aplenty, racist and religious disharmony, political demonstrations, seditious statements of violence to be unleashed on minorities – all clearly all signs of deep divisions previously unseen!

And all hallmarks of an impending failed state say some sociologists and political analysts!

In fact, CM Taib has every reason to demand that those political adventurers from the peninsula withdraw their remarks and apologize not only to him but to his colleagues and the people of Sarawak for being insensitive, ignorant and acting out of line in interfering in Sarawak politics!’ – Dr Jacob George

CONSUMERIST – CM TAIB MAHMUD SHOULD STAY – PERIOD!

Those familiar with ground sentiments in Sarawak can understand why the Sarawak BN is up in arms against several individuals from the BN Peninsula for having the audacity to suggest that Chief Minister Taib Mahmud should resign.

I can also understand why several of the leaders of the Sarawak BN have come to Taib’s defense and condemned such a statement as being insensitive and not taking into cognizance local mindsets and political posturing!

In fact according to reliable sources the majority there were rather insulted and offended by these recent stupid and childish remarks.

More so when made by individuals who themselves hold no ministerial or government positions!

In fact the point was very well put by one of their leaders when he stated:

‘Let it be clear to all Malaysians – the political destiny of the people of Sarawak is determined by and belongs to all the people of Sarawak, and not outsiders.”

Another wanted Peninsular Malaysians to respect Sarawak’s political platform as they wanted to keep it that way.

Both articulates a strong desire for state sovereignty and independence from the many hurdles and shackles Peninsula is facing not forgetting the recent drastic racialist hype of threats, political dominance, warnings, police reports aplenty, racist and religious disharmony, political demonstrations, seditious statements of violence to be unleashed-  all clearly all signs of deep divisions previously unseen!

And all hallmarks of an impending failed state say some sociologists and political analysts!

And certainly Sarawak does not want to see this there!

They have lived in harmony for so long and the comradeship and tolerance level there is unbelievable strong!

Families are so strongly bonded despite intermarriages and differing faiths!

This is something Chief Minister and his team have guarded and maintained!

And looking at the facts on the ground and challengers past, present and future – there is no reason for Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud to resign!

Not immediately!

After all did his party not win ALL SEATS IT CONTESTED?

In fact, CM Taib has every reason to demand that those political adventurers from the peninsula withdraw their remarks and apologize not only to him but to his colleagues and the people of Sarawak for being insensitive, ignorant and acting out of line in interfering in Sarawak politics!

If you ask me I would say that Taib Mahmud should stay and if he desire to stand down then he should move and take over the Sarawak Governor’s position!

CONSUMERIST – BUKIT MERAH OR LYNAS FADILLAH MAKING STUPID REMARKS!

Dato Jacob George

‘Incidentally where was this novice when we addressed the Asia Rare Earth issue in the late 70’s to 90’s?

Where was he when we addressed the various health issues and this matter went to court?

Where was he when we documented evidence and presented them to Court and the authorities then?

The court case was itself well published getting rare international exposure in the 80s-90s before the Cyber breakthrough or today’s technology!

And please do stop making stupid statements like the disposal of radioactive waste by a factory owned by Asian Rare Earth there was under control and posed no health threat to the workers and residents there.

As far as the Lynas issue is concerned independent panel, comprising experts in the field or not, it would be political suicide for any government which thinks it is intelligent to attempt to license this venture when the people are against it!’ – Dr Jacob George

CONSUMERIST – BUKIT MERAH OR LYNAS FADILLAH MAKING STUPID REMARKS!

The quality of our elected representatives really sucks!

That includes those appointed Senators!

Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) SHOULD TAKE NOTE!

A fact that becomes an undeniable fact when they open up their mouth and comment on an issue that they have had no personal experience or knowledge with!

Let us look at one such stupid and silly statement!

It comes from Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Fadillah Yusof who is also the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera (PBB) Youth Chief!

He is reported to have said that the allegation that residents in Bukit Merah, Perak, are suffering from health problems, including cancer, as a result of rare earth processing there is inaccurate and obtained from sources which are unreliable.

He added that the health level there was safe from thorium waste disposal or contaminated materials that contained radioactive substances and there was no threat to the public or the environment.

This to me is a very dangerous spin by a political novice who may have yet not set foot at Bukit Merah or for that matter Papan!

Incidentally where this novice was when we addressed the Asia Rare Earth issue in the late 70’s to 90’s?

Where was he when we addressed the various health issues and this matter went to court?

Where was he when we documented evidence and presented them to Court and the authorities then?

The court case was itself well published getting rare international exposure in the 80s-90s before the Cyber breakthrough or today’s technology!

Is the deputy minister very subtly, mischievously and desperately trying to justify the licensing of the controversial and deadly Lynas (M) Sdn Bhd plant in Gebeng, Pahang when the voters and residents have demonstrated against this!

It has also received international reviews!

Common sense Fadillah if it is so safe then ask the Australians to remove all waste and ship them back to Australia for disposal!

And please do stop making stupid statements like the disposal of radioactive waste by a factory owned by Asian Rare Earth there was under control and posed no health threat to the workers and residents there.

As one voter remarked –

‘Please ask the Deputy Minister from Sarawak to visit the special store built for the radio-active waste (result of Asian Rare Earth) near Papan, Perak!

It can be can be reached from Ipoh-Lumut highway near Lahat.’

He continued:

‘If there was no danger why did they take the trouble to build such a place, away from populated areas?

Even the traffic lights are adjusted to take into account no vehicles are supposed to go through the access road.’

But since this deputy seems a bit blur on the events then let me take him through it.

By the way deputy minister Fadillah if you were still not born then or a child let me take you through this episode that I remember with personal experience as I was then attached to both Consumer Association of Penang (CAP) and its sister organization Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM)!

1984:

6700 residents of Papan (16 kms from Ipoh), where ARE is dumping its waste, signed a petition against it to the government while up to 3000 take part in several demonstrations and a hunger strike!

That was not all – as – environmentalists; radiation experts, physicists and industrial waste experts from abroad visited the site and declared it unsafe with radiation up to 800 times the accepted levels.

Still with me deputy minister – good!

In 1985:

Residents of Bukit Merah obtained a stop work order from the High Court.

In 1986:

Shockingly but no surprise that Malaysia’s Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) deems the site safe, after an ARE clean up, as only some parts have more than acceptable radiation level.

In 1987:

AELB issues a license to ARE to resume work, to demonstrations involving up to 10,000 residents. More than 20, including women, were injured in one incident while 60 were detained by police. None were charged.

Eight residents take legal action against ARE, and up to 3000 marched 8 kms to court on the last day of proceedings.

More than 100 were in the next month detained under the Internal Security Act and released after two months.

1989:

Two children aged five and 11 and a 19-year-old man were diagnosed with acute leukemia.

Other cases like brain cancer, septicemia and other complications are reported.

Seemingly healthy children exposed to radiation were tested and found to be less healthy than those in Carey Island, although the children of Bukit Merah were better nourished.

According to 1986 statistics, Bukit Merah should have only one case of leukemia in thirty years. By the time the plant shuts down, eight cases would have been diagnosed. Seven patients will not survive.

There are also reported cases of birth deformities involving children of workers at the plant.

As far as the Lynas issue is concerned independent panel, comprising experts in the field or not, it would be political suicide for any government which thinks it is intelligent to attempt to license this venture when the people are against it!

Lynas should bite the dust – period!

Going ahead also incidentally rubbishes the much spin – Rakyat Didahulukan, Pencapaian Diutamakana slogan!
