CONSUMERIST – SELANGOR SAND THEFT – LEGALIZING NOT THE ANSWER!

Dato Jacob George

‘So the only logic is Selangor is now ill filtrated by thieves, robbers, conman and others who may have symbiotic ties to powers that be?

When cornered this morning by CASSA, the authorities and the land owner, the main culprit who already had a cabin, excavator and workers and Lorries extracting earth from someone else’s land claimed he had permits for both – river mining and earth!

This right in front of the owner!

So instead of arresting these shenanigans, is the Selangor government saying let us organize them?’ – Dr Jacob George

CONSUMERIST – SELANGOR SAND THEFT – LEGALIZING NOT THE ANSWER!

If they are well financed, connected, organized but illegal is the option legalizing them?

I am referring to the theft of earth and sand in the state of Selangor!

Recently there was major illegal activity near my home at TTDI Jaya in Shah Alam (opposite Monfort Boys Town) where illegal earth and sand from Sungei Damansara were being carried out by a well connected and organized group!

Even TV3 and Utusan Malaysia quoting me carried a story and exposure on it!

Over this weekend they were also stealing earth from the same area – a land mass belonging to TTDI Development while at the same time dumping rubbish from Subang into the area where earth was extracted!

I am advised the culprits were charging between RM35/- to RM55/- per lorry to dump rubbish from another developing area to this one!

Ingenious, crooked to the teeth, and they were organized no doubt having Lorries, car with lookouts and right before the eyes of MBSA!

And MBSA enforcement is a sad joke!

Inefficient, inactive lazy and third graders!

Good only to harass petty traders and poor ‘mak chiks and pak chiks’ selling nasi lemak, pisang goreng and fried kacang by the housing estate to earn extra money!

This million ringgit earth and sand robbery did not take place in some rural area but right in the heartland of Shah Alam and in broad daylight!

So the only logic is Selangor is now ill filtrated by thieves, robbers, conman and others who may have symbiotic ties to powers that be?

When cornered this morning by authorities and the land owner, the main culprit who already had a cabin, excavator and workers and Lorries extracting earth from someone else’s land claimed he had permits for both – river mining and earth!

This right in front of the owner!

So instead of arresting these shenanigans are the Selangor government saying let us organize them?

Is this the only way to address and eradicate sand theft in Selangor by the state government plans to offer more sand mining permits to ‘possible thieves’ who are well connected!

This is to enable the state government to earn revenue from the mining activities rather than lose out to syndicates extracting sand illegally?

I will now approach federal authorities to see how we can jointly address this menace and detain this well organized, financed and connected group!

CONSUMERIST – HUMAN RESOURCES MINISTRY SERVING WHOM?

Dato Jacob George

‘Is there justice for Malaysian workers when they are forced to work for low wages?

Is there justice for employees when they lose jobs through retrenchment or artificially created retrenchments by big business having cables to policymakers and others?

Why are the Industrial Court judgments being repeatedly waylaid by big business with deep pockets in higher legislative tiers?

Why are the employers repeatedly being sucked and licked up to, having statutes enacted repeatedly to protect their vulgar and greed rather than the worker?

Is there ever justice for Malaysian workers?

Whose interests does the Human Resources Ministry serve – the workers or the employers?’ – Dr Jacob George

CONSUMERIST – HUMAN RESOURCES MINISTRY SERVING WHOM?

A promise, promises, promises, and then no action!

Threats from NGO groups – again promises, promises, promises but no action!

So who really fights and protect employees in Malaysia?

And what is the definition of minimum wage sought after?

A minimum wage is the lowest hourly, daily or monthly remuneration that employers may legally pay to workers. Equivalently, it is the lowest wage at which workers may sell their labor.

Although minimum wage laws are in effect in a great many jurisdictions, there are differences of opinion about the benefits and drawbacks of a minimum wage.

Supporters of the minimum wage say that it increases the standard of living of workers and reduces poverty.

Opponents say that if it is high enough to be effective, it increases unemployment, particularly among workers with very low productivity due to inexperience or handicap, thereby harming lesser skilled workers to the benefit of better skilled workers.

The lowest wage determined by law or contract that an employer may pay an employee for a specified job is still being debated by idiots and morons led by their nose by high powered employers and industry!

And really although in Malaysia we have a toothless act called the Wages Council Act 1947 @ perhaps thanks to the colonial masters – it only protects certain categories of workers such as catering and hotel, cinema workers and shop assistants.

Only recently that the coverage of this act is broadened to include workers in other categories!

The basic weakness is that in this country wage is determined largely through market forces.

In jurisdictions where there are unions, the salary will be determined through Collective Agreement (CA).

However, salary determination through CA method is less common since unionized sectors only represent if I am not mistaken 10% of Malaysia’s work force!

Thus CASSA believes that there should be a minimum wage law in Malaysia to protect the basic welfare of workers especially the lower income workers in the private sectors.

In the obese and under worked public sector, the salary structure for the lower income group is much better compared to their counterparts in the private sector. In addition, workers in the public sector have job security!

Have you ever heard of retrenchments in the public sector?

But let me go on record to state that the wildest and strongest opponents of minimum wages are the employers and their lobbyists in the public sector!

Human Resources Minister – who does he support big business or workers?

Their argument is that increasing wage will increase cost of operation and the company may end up going bust.

Strange that this stupid justification is even stated by those we consider learned!

But cost management is more than just keeping labor cost down. There are a lot of other factors in play that determine the profitability of a company.

I am told that Malaysia Airlines (MAS), for example, has successfully turned around a business that was losing money into a profitable enterprise without cutting workers’ pay.

I am advised that in fact employees’ salary for the lower levels were raised by their then Managing Director Idris Jala!

He is supposed to have stated the following in a media interview:

‘Recently, we increased the salaries of all MAS staff earning below RM1, 000 (per month). Now, there is no MAS staff who earns below RM1, 000. This may increase cost but we need to do the right thing, which is to help our staff make a decent living and support their families.’

The truth is thousands of companies are making profits through cheap labors in Malaysia!

If only they realize – reducing labor cost is not the only way to be competitive.

CASSA is appealing to the Malaysia government to introduce a minimum wage, which should range between RM1000.00 to RM1500.00 per month.

A good minimum wage would increase the household income, attract more local Malaysian workers as well reduce the dependence on foreign labor!

CONSUMERIST – 51 KMS + 36 STATIONS = 50 BILLION MRT?

Dato Jacob George

‘Many have spent the nation’s wealth like it was their ‘father’s money’ in the past to boost their fat egos and their psychological and mental insecurities which is still exhibited after they have stepped down from political office?

So there should be transparency, good governance, ethics, accountability – all great sayings but most absent in our public life!’ – Dr Jacob George

CONSUMERIST – 51 KMS + 36 STATIONS = 50 BILLION MRT?

So far we are told that the MRT project costs RM50 Billion and it would cover 51km and there are over 36 stations in it!

I will leave the mathematics and its controversies to the politicians but safe to say that so far I must congratulate the Land and Public Transport Commission for organizing over 30 public hearings even when in several of them they were more a bashing session by the residents rather than a dialogue to fix a plan of action that will provide a comprehensive transport system in the Klang Valley and eventually the nation!

Do not get me wrong – we are interested in the mathematics for it involves public monies and even perhaps loans taken which we are expected to repay!

The last thing we need to become another Greece and other financially hit nation!

More so with possibility of capital flight, migration and brain drain in the near future in view political uncertainties, curtail of religious freedoms, rising polarization, fascism and racism!

white elephant above?
Many have spent the nation’s wealth on what is today alleged to be a wastage and white elephant while planning others that did not take off – like it was their father’s money in the past to boost their fat egos and their psychological and mental insecurities which is still exhibited after they have stepped down from political office?

So there should be transparency, good governance, ethics, accountability – all great sayings but most absent in our public life!

It is clear that the ‘not at my backyard syndrome still’ persists though everyone acknowledges we cannot have a system where millions of cars driven by single occupants could be the norm of the near future!

It is good to hear that there is also a formula on compensation for landowners who will lose out their land in view of the said project.

More importantly – there must be an open door policy to address all questions and queries so that issues could be managed professionally and in good faith!

It is important that civil servants and others with ‘Napoleonic tendencies’ be not allowed to participate in various hearings.

We should also take cognizance that Malaysian consumers also find it disgusting when a project is planed in clandestine manner and shafted down their throats with great costs and cost over runs some masquerading as government projects and those days of speaking down has long gone!

Or when those driving it have absolutely no track record or worst highly questionable reputation and track record!

Take consumers lightly and you pay dearly as the next General Election looms!

CONSUMERIST – NAJIB MUST MAKE PALANIVEL MINISTER FOR MIC RESURRECTION!

‘I am convinced that he means good and it is therefore pertinent he be made a full minister to provide the political platform needed to address political reform and engage and if needed confront political predators waiting on the sidelines and within to strike that killer blow!

If G. Palanivel is not made full minister, does not show he means drastic change, does not move away from his predecessor’s alleged mistakes but allows the status quo, ‘basket cases’ and ‘apple polishers’ to become senators and candidates, I will predict that there will be many independent candidates participating against the MIC the next time and among them, certainly heavyweights respected not just by Indians but by all races!’ – Dr Jacob George

CONSUMERIST – NAJIB MUST MAKE PALANIVEL MINISTER FOR MIC RESURRECTION!

During its glory days in the 60 to 70s the MIC held two cabinet minister posts!

Then its late party president V Manickavasagam was communication minister while his deputy, Athi Nahappan, was appointed as minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of the law portfolio!

That was then!

That was before we had political self servers creating a political platform that they remain the sole, mighty voice of the community and basically takers (close relatives and symbiotic individuals) and political insiders, holding post of councilors, senators, state assemblymen and women and ultimately member of parliament from whom senior portfolios were given.

Sadly old farts of politics were recycled and young relatives and runners were appointed!

Today the party is in sad shambles and accordingly to reliable analyst certain to lose remaining seats even in what was once considered safe seats!

I raised this question several times in the past and I do it  again – who do those in state and federal governments really serve?

I went on record to state that personally I found greater success and satisfaction in my interactions on finding solutions to the community issues and public policy initiatives I addressed from others rather than any MIC based representatives!

This is despite the close friendship I have with several at both state  and federal levels!

It is sad and strange political phenomenon that is and continue to exists and if unchecked will lead to the demise of the MIC come GE13 whether you spin over Twitter or continue spinning over Astro and other MSM!

This is why I have been lobbying and appealing  to Premier Najib Tun Razak to facilitate a swapping of 2 deputy minister post for a full minister for present party president G.Palanivel!

This is important for the party president to address the downward spiral and engage a full and comprehensive revamp of the party with new faces from within and the NGO forum and objectives for the community on education, employment, housing, healthcare, micro-credit, poverty eradication, small and medium enterprise and other interventionist policies!

They must be audited regularly and key performance indicators (PKI) put into place!

Those unable to deliver holistically be removed!

I am aware he is earnest in bringing about change, revamping the party and steering it to new frontiers!

I am convinced that he means good and it is therefore pertinent he be made a full minister to provide the political platform needed to address reform and engage and if needed confront political predators waiting on the sidelines and within to strike that killer blow!

If G. Palanivel is not made full minister, does not show he means drastic change but allows the status quo, ‘basket cases’ and ‘apple polishers’ to become senators and candidates I will predict that there will be many independent candidates participating against the MIC the next time and among them, certainly heavyweights respected not just by Indians but by all races!

The political change must be made Premier Sir!

Palanivel must be given a fighting chance!
