Consumerist: Goodies, Subsidies And Media Wars – Countries Facing National Elections!

Malaysia faces a general election when there is enough courage to call for one, while, our neighbors Philippines and Indonesia have theirs coming too.

In Australia, they were courageous, politically fair, accountable and transparent in announcing the dates of the next elections without any ‘hide and seek’, so that the government of the day and the opposition can do what they are called to do – govern!

And not be caught shamelessly allegedly trying to buy their way to a nomination or worst bribe the electorate with all forms and kinds of goodies and the mainstream media and mercenary journalist and bloggers ‘feel good stories and spins?’

Here, despite the many goodies and cash payouts – Malaysians are generally struggling with various battles revolving around ‘bread and butter issues; escalation of costs of living and services and their credit crunch!

So I predict that the continued outflow of goodies will not sway the voting patterns in GE13!

Voters in all regions have made up their minds – it is only the fence sitters and even they have recently shifted!

Far too much scandals have rocked us by, many allegations still unanswered which includes the brutal murder of a very pretty Mongolian lass while accusations are made unsubstantiated against political opponents assisted by a cowed press?

Some countries are using race and religion big time but this has received flak as communities within nations has moved from such tendencies in view a globalized reshaping of national and international borders and UN Security Council and international laws, though times slow but still addressing genocide and apartheid!

In the Philippines and Indonesia there is far greater challenges and in Indonesia the whole question of fuel subsidy threatens gravely.

It is widely reported that the Indonesia’s government is again trying to confront runaway fuel subsidy costs that now account for more than 30 per cent of state spending and are draining funds that should be going for much-needed infrastructure in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

I am advised Pak Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s administration have new measures in mind to restrict use of subsidized fuel.

But will he with an election next year and hurting memories of violent protests over fuel-price rises in 2005 and 2008?

Like some ASEAN countries specializing in subsidies, Indonesia is under pressure to reduce the subsidies.

But raising fuel prices is suicidal as it will hurt low income communities.

Here the last increase took place while all eyes were on Lahad Datu!

We have repeatedly spoken about the removal of subsidies but if that is not addressed in a fair and reasonable way it will create a backlash!

You cannot remove subsidies at one level and importantly revolving around grass root communities and the middle class but give out huge obese subsidies to the industry captains and cronies in other sectors!

This is vulgar!

And there are many imponderables to consider as we face the future with challengers and fed with fabrication, outright lies and news manipulation where truth becomes a major casualty of political wrestling and obsession!

Consumerist: Alleged Negligence In Baby Death At Klang GH – Please Do Not Politicize Matter Before Appropriate Investigations!

Dato Jacob George

‘In the meantime, let us give space to those mourning the loss and in mental trauma, those who are accused of negligence and the relevant authorities doing the pertinent investigations so that justice will be forthcoming and not a lynching or making a scapegoat out of innocents!

There are thousands of dedicated sensitive, good and honorable doctors and nurses manning our government hospitals and let us be fair to them.’ – Dr Jacob George

Consumerist: Alleged Negligence In Baby Death At Klang GH – Please Do Not Politicize Matter Before Appropriate Investigations!

It has been brought to my attention that a 26 year old patient was admitted on 17/03/2013 at 0730 hrs at Tengku Ampuan Rahimah General Hospital in Klang or popularly known as ‘Klang GH’.

She is reportedly had labor pains with allegedly a burst water bag and left unattended until 19/03/2013.

It is reported that when a doctor examined her it was confirmed that there were no movements and the baby is dead.

The baby was only induced at 1930 hrs.

IF True – This is very sad and I feel very much for the couple in question!

According to reports the said doctor was questioned why was she left unattended for 2 days. Is this how our govt hospitals work?
What happened to their professionalism and ethics?

This issue has now attracted a wide spectrum of online commentators and has taken ‘a life of its own’ in the media!

These allegations are serious. As someone who has dealt with medico-legal cases such as this – it is important that we do not conduct a trial by media, and more importantly, bring local politicos into the matter.

2. IF a police report is made – good.

3. A complaint should be directed to the Director General for the MOH for an independent task force to be set up as they did in several that I was involved in before.

4. I sincerely appeal that there be no press conference till all the investigations are finalized, all relevant facts ascertained because when raw emotions run wild it can be dangerous.

5. There must be accountability and transparency but going emotionally ballistic will not help. Neither making allegations that are unfounded.

I understand now that a Police report has been made IF that is true then this takes a course of its own.

In the meantime, let us give space to those mourning the loss and in mental trauma, those who are accused of negligence and the relevant authorities doing the pertinent investigations so that justice will be forthcoming and not a lynching or making a scapegoat out of innocents!

There are thousands of dedicated sensitive, good and honorable doctors and nurses manning our government hospitals and let us be fair to them.

Till the facts – all facts are in – my appeal, please do not politicize this issue.

I will certainly be looking into this matters as well, from the public interest perspective!

Consumerist: GE13 – Seats Infighting Already Taking Its Toll While Political Predators Worried But Simple Malaysians Just Chill?

Dato Jacob George

‘Those who have had careers as politicians, having never held ‘an honest job’ prior are even more vulnerable and much to fear, if they have obese wealth that cannot be explained by simple calculation of wages and incidentals?

These includes their spouses, children, relatives and cronies!

The majority of us have nothing to fear – Praise God – we have unpaid bills and mortgages and are struggling to get out of the credit crunch!’ – Dr Jacob George

Consumerist: GE13 – Seats Infighting Already Taking Its Toll While Political Predators Worried But Simple Malaysians Just Chill?

The infighting for seats has started and it looks like no one is safe from this!

Even those despised ‘fat cats of politics’, the recycled self serving politicos with questionable track record who have been embarrassingly and soundly defeated want another go in GE13 and this creates more questions than answers why we have not seen change and new faces when the electorate will have at least 25% new voters?

And why we should allow these expired political shelf lives to re-contest elections?

Sounds vulgar!

Industry captains and individuals who have been ‘cronies’ for the powerful are worried that they will loss it all!

Worst, that there will be investigations, post elections of their unexplained accumulated wealth?

Those who have had careers as politicians having never held an honest job prior are even more vulnerable and much to fear if they have obese wealth that cannot be explained by simple calculation of wages and incidentals?

The majority of us have nothing to fear – we have unpaid bills and mortgages and are struggling to get out of the credit crunch!

AS my former Professor shared with me this morning:

‘Election is usually a turbulent period in our South East Asian regions.

If the past is any guide, the storm usually ebbs after the election. Our as Christians or believers of the ALMIGHTY we must always remember that our ship is secure with the presence of the ONE, WHO STILLS THE STORM!’

Consumerist: Govt Call On RCI On Lahad Datu Lauded But Should Wait!

Dato Jacob George

‘A RCI now plays into the hands of politicians and political predators who have nothing good to say about anything but are just more interested at ridiculing and increasing the blame game.’ – Dr Jacob George

Consumerist: Govt Call On RCI On Lahad Datu Lauded But Should Wait!

Much as I am glad that the government has not dismissed the possibility of setting up a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) or opening a White Paper to investigate claims that third parties were behind the terrorist intrusion in Lahad Datu, Sabah as stated by dear friend Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, I would like to appeal to the former to leave it at the backburner for the moment!

Our boys and girls in harm’s way protecting the nation need our undivided support as they take the fight to the terrorists and clean them from our shores!

A RCI now plays into the hands of politicians and political predators who have nothing good to say about anything but are just more interested at ridiculing and increasing the blame game.

There will be more finger pointing and a major finger will be pointed at the architect of Project IC who based on public comments and intellectual conversations breeds nothing but contempt for that man – for what he is alleged to have done in Sabah?

Even though it had nothing to do with the present administration the collateral damage and tremors will be felt resulting in major defeats to government candidates because the allegation remains that we have failed to hear the cries of Sabahans?

But Hishammuddin is right that a thorough investigation is needed to be done to find out the real motive for the intrusion including if there were any parties which underwrote the terrorists from the southern Philippines to undermine the country’s stability and sovereignty.

And that takes a very special bipartisan team to receive any support or credibility.

And timing is also important.

So brother Hishammudin first thing first – let us get rid of these killers of our boys on our shores making a lesson out of them – that any future foreigner terrorist adventurer will fear of duplicating.

Consumerist: Welcoming Pope Francis – And Real Transformation And Real Change!

Dato Jacob George

‘Many preach about change and transformation. But it is hogwash and serves only a political posturing while spending multi millions of trimmings and trappings but here – there is real envisaging of change to take place!

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio had a reputation as a humble pastor who even in high office commuted to work by bus, lived in an apartment rather than an apostolic palace and cooked his own meals.’ – Dr Jacob George

Consumerist: Welcoming Pope Francis – And Real Transformation And Real Change!

Though an Anglican – I have always been a ‘Catholic at heart’ and worship also with my family at the Divine Mercy Church In Shah Alam!

After all my uncle was a former Catholic Archbishop (retired) and many friends here are very senior clergymen and some Bishops!

I have also been a great admirer of St. Francis Of Assisi as would change, transformation minded Theologians.

So I cannot but welcome the election of Jorge Bergoglio, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, as the new Pope.

Cardinal Bergoglio, who will be known as Pope Francis, was elected pontiff on the fifth ballot on Wednesday in the papal conclave in Rome.

The 76-year old is the first pontiff to come from Latin America and his election follows the retirement of Pope Benedict XVI last

The election is radical and significant.

Pope Francis is the first non-European Pope for more than a millennium- and the first from Latin America, home to 40% of the world’s Catholics – reveals in the cardinals who elected him an awareness of the size and importance of the flock outside Europe.

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio had a reputation as a humble pastor who even in high office commuted to work by bus, lived in an apartment rather than an apostolic palace and cooked his own meals.

In the inevitable comparisons with his predecessor, Benedict XVI, some will point to the new pontiff’s credentials as a local bishop, rather than a Vatican insider.

The 76-year-old Argentine has described inequality as “a social sin that cries out to Heaven” – and has emphasized the Church’s duty to serve the poor and disenfranchised.

He is known for modernizing a previously conservative Argentine Church, while Benedict XVI served as Catholicism’s doctrinal watchdog for more than two decades before he was elected Pope.
