Consumerist: DOE Website Classic Example Of Incompetence And Stupidity!

Are we really serious about the haze?

By the way several members of the public called me to ask how accurate is the information given at the Department of Environment’s website?

I visit the website several times in a day and more often than not, the 11am API readings is not updated until 3pm in the afternoon and the 5pm API readings do not come online until 8 or 9pm or sometimes the next day.

Very often the information is not updated until the next day!

So I cannot but wonder IF our ‘Berkhidmat untuk Negara’ DOE staff are serious about getting information out?

Are they not aware that that website becomes a barometer in decisions made in protecting school going children?

Not just that senior citizens and others monitor the reading update to decide on their outdoor activities.

Even the first reading at 7am does not appear on time, what more can I say? So what is the use of having a website when it’s the typical civil service mentality about doing things on time?

So I cannot but be flabbergasted that there is a statement that all schools located in areas where the API reading is 300 and above must close and others with API reading below 250 should stay open.

What stupidity is this?

Worst that the state education department has to refer to the ministry in areas where the API is between 250 and 300.

Now what ever happened to empowerment?

If this was the decision after the National Security Council under the Prime Minister’s Department met it is a stupid move as they should have looked at the statistics coming out from public and private hospitals and clinics on the upsurge in respiratory illness and attacks!

After I posted updates in my blog at http://www.drjacobgeorge.com/ and my facebook update I am informed by medical doctor friends and specialist that the number of people seeking treatment for respiratory problems has doubled and the people have been advised to stay indoors and wear masks!

I am told that patients with asthma, bronchitis and lung diseases are the ones who will suffer the most during the haze. No specific medication could be a magic bullet during this season, however, taking precautionary measures is always better than cure!

Interestingly friends in three hospitals – Sg. Buloh Hospital, Prince Court Medical Centre and INS Specialist Center have recorded a 50% increase in the number of patients seeking treatment for pulmonary diseases.

As a parent as long as I find that the air index is high and I smell something burning, my eyes burn, it shows that the level of concentration of the smoke is quite high – I will say nay to my children going to school – so get indoors and those ill, have history of asthma, other ailments, children, senior citizens, pregnant mothers are all vulnerable!

Consumerist: Haze Fallout – MOH Urged To Release Update Data On Acute Respiratory Infections!

At the time of this update, the situation is not getting any better with the haze outbreak nationwide!

The finger pointing has also not stopped as politicians, policymakers and bureaucrat idiots pass the blame game around not taking account for this major cock up!

As far as I am concerned ‘up and down’ figures of API readings reveal nothing on the collateral damage been done in the region.

And as it gets worse can I appeal that those red flagging and others monitoring this situation (IF they are doing so?) reveal more information to the public.

For one can I appeal to the Ministry of Health (MOH) to release data on the rise of acute respiratory infections in the region since this outbreak?

To me that will be a good indicator of the seriousness of the problem!

So how Health Minister Sir?

Consumerist: International Schools Told To Follow Ministry Guidelines On Haze Threat Closures!

‘The government of Malaysia has made a decision in the public interest in view an emergency and A Levels or Internal examinations or whatsoever – private and international schools must follow the directive and not interpret it as it is optional!’ – Dr Jacob George

Consumerist: International Schools Told To Follow Ministry Guidelines On Haze Threat Closures!

It was strange but expectant that I received over 28 calls from various parts of the Penang, Johor, the Klang Valley – from parents – whose children are going to private and international schools.

And why me?

As you are aware the Malaysian government took the decision to close down schools in various states that includes Kuala Lumpur and Selangor after the haze situation nationwide deteriorated putting lives at risk!

But I am told that several private and international schools ignored the directive all together!

This is certainly silly and totally unbecoming and unwarranted!

IF the government takes such a decision it is based on emergencies and in the public interest and when these institutions who survive on a government license to operate refuse to, it becomes to put lightly – ‘Kurang Ajar!’

For the foreigners who read this it means – in other words ‘arrogance!’

So parents called me and I called up several schools and spoke to the management who told me that they are open despite the government directive!

They are in the midst of the A- Levels Examinations and internal examinations but that the parents have been given the choice!

I think I am not exaggerating or over reacting IF I say that that misses the point altogether!

The government of Malaysia has made a decision in the public interest in view an emergency and A Levels or Internal examinations or whatsoever – private and international schools must follow the directive and not interpret it as it is optional!

I will be submitting the names of the schools to my dear friend the Minister of Education this week so that an official letter of reprimand can be given to the management of these schools.

They should remember they survive on the government’s goodwill and not the other way around.

And the government can make it very difficult for private and international institutions of education if individuals like me start screaming aloud!

I do not want to do that as I want to be lovable – loved and liked!

Get my drift?

Great cheers!

As for the parents of these children, you should be more vocal at your Parents-Teachers-Management meetings in the future!

This arrogance from the management is certainly unbecoming and has to be addressed accordingly!

I am sure IF you want to contact me you will find my mobile number quite available!

Consumerist: Haze – The Industry Captains and Others Don’t Care About Us!

As you are reading this blog posting, millions are staying indoors totally inconvenienced by a group of highly and politically connected companies of Malaysian and Singapore origin!

As you are reading this blog posting indoors – your freedom invaded – the chairman and board of directors of these politically connected companies of cronies and parasites are enjoying their chauffeured driven rides to 5 star hotels to have their lunches, dinners, off to their favorite drinking holes and spas totally devoid of any sensitiveness or feelings of what wrong they have vicariously done to consumers living in this region!

The problem is transnational now!

As you are reading this blog posting, telephones calls are being made to the politically connected, the friendly media barons, the spin doctor and others to play down the issue.

As you are reading this blog posting, people in powerful public positions and these scrums of low life, we call industry captains and positioned in powerful corporate and public positions for past acts and utter benevolence to the political elite are conspiring how to avoid yet another expectation of accountability to millions put in harm’s way!

As you are reading this blog posting, these irresponsible scrums of industry players are planning their business and vacation trips elsewhere to relax, play golf, live the high life all paid for by the people in harm’s way!

Already several readers have emailed me saying –

Lawyer Sally Chew – Dr Jacob I really doubt any legal action would be initiated against the Malaysian companies involved as it involves a lot of the top brass cronies!

Ultimately, all the companies will be protected, and nothing will ever happen to them for this is how the business-government nexus works. This is how buying influence and corruption work.

Dr Dillion – Dato George. While we appreciate and respect your commitment and dedication in upholding consumer rights without fear, you must realize that ultimately this is how privatizing profit and socializing costs work in the hands of powerful politicians and their lackeys in industry. This is what I will call third world political tribalism!

Teacher Carol Lim – Doc, all these years, if I understand over 16 years this has been happening. The top Indonesian leaders and their counterparts in the ASEAN region have been giving pathetic excuses like they are investigating the matter and that some foreign companies are involved but without addressing punitive sanctions and redress to the affected!

This is because there is sine biotic relationship between all these individual groups of a common interest – greed!

Corporate Leader and former diplomat Dr Rani Matthews – Shame on Malaysia and the others in position of authority! Shame on Indonesia! The fact that the Indonesian government has not brought any of these guilty companies to justice indicates that for some reason the Indonesian authorities do not wish to punish the guilty companies and thus put an end to this practice. Perhaps they are all in it together. And certainly Dr Jacob, until this apathy and indifference of the Indonesian government and others changes, the people in neighboring countries will continue to suffer. I like your suggestion though of taking this up to the international courts
of Jurist at the Hague!

Dr Prema Krishnan – Dato, I have no confidence in the authorities! But I hope you pursue the legal action angle at either the UN or the Hague as this is now a transnational issue! We appreciate your efforts in this matter.

As you are reading this blog posting, there are hundreds of consumers seeking medical attention in hospitals and clinics for breathing difficulties, eye irritation, chest pains, and other ailments that can be directly connected to the haze outbreak in the region!

Consumerist: Haze – Malaysian Companies Responsible Must be Taken to Court – They are Not Above The Law!

Dato Jacob George

Consumerist: Haze – Malaysian Companies Responsible Must be Taken to Court – They are Not Above The Law!

This is truly the worst haze emergency that we have encountered in the last 16 years!

It has brought great discomfort, economic loss, health hazards, logistic nightmares, disruption to life and anxieties!

I now appeal on behalf all peace loving Malaysians that Indonesia do the right thing now by providing clear exposure on the identity of the Malaysian and Singapore companies involved so that legal action which includes class action in Indonesia can be initiated!

It is pertinent that Indonesia come clean in this matter by providing the legal teams initiating the proceedings all necessary data on company names and concession maps to enable it to act against plantation firms that allow slash-and-burn farming.

My request is similar to Singapore’s environment minister who made the request to his Indonesian counterpart by telephone as air pollution on the island hit unhealthy levels for a second straight day, with some of the worst readings since a 1997 regional haze crisis.

Like my learned friend, Environment and Water Resources Minister Vivian Balakrishnan feels it is pertinent that we exert both legal, international and commercial pressure against companies causing the haze!

Their identities must be revealed!

Multi prong injunctions must also be taken to freeze their banks accounts as proceedings take root!

This is the expectation of public interest on both sides of the causeway!

Indonesian must take the high moral ground in publishing the exact concession maps with a combination of satellite photos, which are updated daily, which will help experts to pinpoint the errant companies paving the way for legal action to be initiated!

I hope third parties do not put undue influence to prevent these exposures by Indonesia as to protect their interest in these irresponsible companies!

IF that happens then the matter must be taken to the UN and the Hague so that those guilty of these offenses and others aiding, abetting and assisting them (the guilty companies) to be protected from liability are themselves exposed and shamed in the international courts!

These companies whether Malaysian or Singaporean are not above the law!
