Consumerist: Dr Mahathir’s Views Should Be Taken By The Govt If It Intends To Prevent Consumer Backlash!

Dato Jacob George

People with profile, expertise and businesses knowledge will migrate, no two ways about it after all they are not rent seekers!

The irony based on the present policy trends – they will be replaced by economic migrants from warring West Asian countries, scam experts from African states and our national manpower agents and politicians favorites – unskilled Bangladeshis!

Consumerist: Dr Mahathir’s Views Should Be Taken By The Govt If It Intends To Prevent Backlash!

I enjoyed reading former premier, Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s comments and advice to the Najib administration on the escalating costs of essential goods and services in Malaysia!

I am happy to learn from family members who met him at Cairns, Australia recently that he was recovering well and as someone who had his humble beginnings in Sungei Petani, Kedah, I cannot but continue to pray for his and ‘Mummy’s’ continued good health!

Dr Mahathir’s comments I believe comes from his sincere deep concern and anxiety at the pain and uneasiness of Malaysian consumers at such a drastic increase in all sectors that will now affect Malaysian consumers despite them suffering the last 3 years with all kinds of price increases and living on a credit lifestyle which is expected to get worse in 2014!

IF the rising trend is not curtailed and the government does not change its bourgeoisie lifestyle in totality it means only one thing – all roads will lead to economic slowdown, stagflation, recession, slump and even a depression and finally bankruptcy!

People with profile, expertise and businesses knowledge will migrate, no two ways about it after all they are not rent seekers!

It is strictly economics for them!

They are not passionate and patriotic as this writer!

The irony based on the present policy trends – they will be replaced by economic migrants from warring West Asian countries, scam experts from African states and our national manpower agents and politicians favorites – unskilled Bangladeshis!

So should we always blame the businessmen for the follies at the marketplace?

I was speaking to a former industry captain who has migrated and doing exceptionally in his new found home!

He alleges that the Malaysian marketplace is not competitive!

He gave me a lecture on Economics 101, saying most of our leaders, including those claiming to be wizards, are incapable of comprehending.

He maintains that a market economy driven by private enterprises will go for efficiency and cost minimization as given. But how do businessmen reduce cost when they are operating in an economy saddled with distortions and colossal rent-seeking practices and some, by institutionalized design?

He asked me how can we reduce energy cost when lopsided IPPs agreements were never rectified and corrected?

How do they reduce transportation cost when all the highways are operated by cronies who are also monopolies with questionable agreements that have never been addressed transparently?

And yes – you do not have to be a rocket scientist to ask the question – just how does one reduce the prices of essential goods such as rice, sugar, flour and cars when subsidies on them were reduced but the monopolies in importation and distribution are still in the hands of the selected few?

No prizes for guessing just who?

How do they reduce transactions cost when businessmen have to grease at each and every tier and nook and corner?

How to reduce inflation when so many people are getting fat pays for doing almost nothing (in fact their contributions to the economy is negative), while those working their butts out are getting pittance? How to increase efficiency when most of the workers are so poorly trained and motivated?

Just look at the obese public sector alone and then analyze it against the yearly Auditor Generals reports and ask just why are we putting up with this colossal financial hemorrhage year in and year out with no one getting penalized or charged?

Got my drift?

Consumerist: Religious Mobs Pressuring Federal Court – Is This Not A Contempt?

Dato Jacob George

No group, no matter how evangelical. puritanical or politically powerful, must think they are to have a monopoly on self righteousness and to stream roll justice according to their whims and fancies!

Consumerist: Religious Mobs Pressuring Federal Court – Is This Not A Contempt?

It does not auger well for Malaysia in the international fora when the due process of law is been interfered with by mobs!

It does not auger for all that talk of transformation when litigants are harassed, maliciously attacked by trial by media!

It does not auger well for moderate Malaysia (?) when its leaders which includes retired judges stay silent when the access to the legal process is been interfered with by shenanigans!

It is the right of any litigant to take his cause to the highest levels of the legal process and that must never be impeded or interfered with!

The court must also be allowed to make its decision in whatever way it deems fit in accordance to the laws of the country and the federal constitution.

No group, no matter how evangelical. puritanical or politically powerful, must think they are to have a monopoly on self righteousness and to stream roll justice according to their whims and fancies!

Once a decision is made all must respect the decision.

To manipulate perversely facts and say that the Court of Appeal made a finding of fact so do not appeal is ridiculous!

It clearly shows how silly those behind these manipulation are!

If you want to stretch that same argument, would it not also sound right that the government should not have appealed to the Court of Appeal because the High Court made a finding of fact?

Ultimately, we need to know whether mobs dictate the course of legal process in Malaysia or truly we still uphold the principles and fundamentals of access to the legal process to address issues and human rights!

Consumerist: Sarawak & Sabah Certainly Deserves More Cabinet Posts!

Dato Jacob George

‘Of course we can say one thing and do another as is the case today – and – continue to reward those who deserve not either the positions, the honorific’s, the appointments to political positions, GLCs, senator ships, made ambassador or other plum pruning’s while those who honestly sweat it out serving the rakyat truly because they do not lobby or have political Godfathers are sidelined into oblivion?’

Consumerist: Sarawak & Sabah Certainly Deserves More Cabinet Posts!

‘Rakyat didahulukan pencapaian diutamakan’ screams the cliché say!

This is no rocket science!

Performance matches positioning!

You cannot get goodies based on aged old tradition and sentiments or because some feel that they must have cabinet positions to be relevant when their relevance in national politics have gone on a downward spiral!

The last General elections was a watershed of course and the relevance of political parties were put to the severe test!

IF the cliché say is to be believed as a yardstick or benchmark then I cannot but say that there must be a drastic cabinet reshuffle in 2014 which must see successful politicians from Sabah and Sarawak been given prominent political positions in the Cabinet!

That is the political reality today!

Of course we can say one thing and do another as is the case today – and – continue to reward those who deserve not either the positions, the honorific’s, the appointments to political positions, GLCs, senator ships, made ambassador or other plum pruning’s while those who honestly sweat it out serving the rakyat truly because they do not lobby or have political Godfathers are sidelined into oblivion?

If that happens it will be sad for my brethren in Sarawak and Sabah – because they deserve far better!

Consumerist: First Unbelievable Salary Reviews – Now A 400 % Increase In Business Licence Fee – What Is Happening Next In Selangor?

Dato Jacob George

Consumerist: First Unbelievable Salary Reviews – Now A 400 % Increase In Business Licence Fee – What Is Happening Next In Selangor?

Perhaps, still in a political hang over their GE13 success in the state and initiating unreasonable and unbelievable hikes in their salaries – they now facilitate a business licence fees hike which has shot up by 400 percent in several areas.

Among the councils involved in the fee revision are the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ), which implemented it through the Local Government Act 1976.

So it is clear that the present state government has not taken cognizance of the cost increases faced by small- and medium-scale businesses as well as workers, the middle class and farmers who are facing the prospect of the goods and services tax (GST), toll increases and also electricity tariff increase’ and in sheer political hypocrisy raising the stakes at a time things are unbearable for Malaysian consumers!

For the record, raising the stakes by 400% is vulgar and insensitive!

It is inexplicable how this double standards exist in Selangor when their counterparts are at this material time attacking the Federal Government over other hikes!

I can only appeal that like their lust to increase salaries for themselves this increase and other policy changes in the pipeline along similar veins be immediately addressed and changed in the public interest!
