CONSUMERIST: MALAYSIAN POLITICS – Taking Stock And Changing For The Better!
“I wonder how many of the present Malaysian politicians will be remembered for the good they have done in 10 years’ time and the sacrifices they have made for the country, not their children, wives, relatives, cronies, hangers-on, runners and other third parties who are multimillionaires, corporate and political figures sadly, not in their own right?” – Dato Dr Jacob George
CONSUMERIST: MALAYSIAN POLITICS – POLITICAL SURROGATES PLAYING THE FIELD?
Something vulgar is taking place in Malaysia never seen in our nation’s history! And we had a proud dignified history at that!
But all that was compromised after we had a dictator as Premier followed by a number of political weaklings some who allowed the nation governed by auto pilot and “in-laws” while another believes media hype and press statements stating what disfranchised Malaysians want to hear being palliated without real change being the answer to cries for change that one can really believe in!
But of late another twist had taken place where we see political surrogates and mercenaries being employed or engaged to manipulate, distort and even abuse logical thinking all for political expediency!
Fabrication, lies, minority bashing and ridicule, concoction being the trade mark!
Even blatant seditious allegations and minority bashing being a hallmark and increasing!
Or acts of blatant corruption and abuse are seen in ‘racial lens’ – a stupidity of course, embarrassing the majority of right thinking Malaysians, universal principles of justice, law and order or the rule of law of a state!
We have seen a racist right wing repeatedly highjack national issues along racial and religious terms, even if they have no locus in all of those issue!
Boasting of millions of followers but we see barely a handful – “the same fascist faces” – if any but that does not stop the spin being repeated!
On the other end of the spectrum we seen mercenary bloggers, even NGOs being roped in and shocking among them a consumer movement and we understand them to be party members with one eying a seat or a senator ship the next round?
I have always said if you have political ambitions leave the consumer movement.
Do not highjack the consumer movement for your political ambitions!
But the disturbing trend is when politicians abuse public office and its machinery for a political agenda which serves less than 4 million members if at all!
At a young age, 5 years old if not mistaken, where I had the privilege of holding hands with the nation’s founding fathers who were close associates of my late grandfather an educationist in Sungei Petani, Kedah.
I had the joy of seeing them have meals cooked by my late grandmother followed through with lively political discourse and a round of cards which was always dignified and proper!
Laughter and jokes followed each round as tea, hot curry puffs, delicacies and Malayalam sweets were served!
There were no issues pertaining to food served and fellowship enjoyed!
Those were memorable times!
When they lost dear friends there was never hesitation to be part of the grieving friend’s family partaking and sharing in the grief!
They were simple, approachable and great men of faith and of politics rarely boasting and defending their religious convictions and creeds at each and every turn of their political life!
As a result even a 5 year old then, can remember his great times with these men and founding fathers despite the years gone by!
In fact, it was inexplicable that I again met the late founding father at Penang Medical Center in the 80s as a young man, this time and he wanted me to investigate an allegation, an infant died of famine in Lunas, Kedah!
He knew my investigative strengths as a researcher and my cordial ties with the media, even then.
I remember this fragile, frail but loving man look at me and say:
“Hi, you are exactly your grandfather. Sudah kahwin? @Married?. Son, no one dies of famine in Malaysia let alone, Kedah @rice bowl of Malaysia. This must be made right! Can you do something?”
I rectified that allegation despite upsetting, my then employers who were behind that report and were furious at that time till I explained the issue and background to it all!
And the founding father was indeed happy.
I have fond memories of all of them!
I wonder how many of present day Malaysian politicians will be remembered for the good they have done in 10 years’ time or the sacrifices they have made for the country, not their children, relatives, cronies, hangers-on, runners and other third parties who are multimillionaires, corporate and political figures“ sadly, not in their own right?
Govt must not hide anything about GST
It is time for the government to come clean on the impact of the goods and services tax (GST) on prices of goods.
Instead of merely issuing statements which do not at all allay consumer fears, the relevant authorities have to seriously study the price effects on the people.
Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam president Datuk Dr Jacob George has defended the efforts of NGOs and related organisations having discussions about the potential effects of GST on various products and services, arguing they are not “scare tactics” as interpreted by the government.
The market is merely reacting to uncertainty, given that there is much to speculate on the prices of goods.
“The government should not be pussyfooting around and has to come clean on the real impact of GST on products and services. The panic we are seeing right now is merely an echo of the market sentiments as there will definitely be an impact on consumers,” he told Theantdaily.
He was responding to a series of articles recently highlighting the potential additional costs consumers have to pay following speculated price increases on various products and services, such as medicine, healthcare, movie tickets and even interbank transfers.
The Malaysian Insider quoted Federation of Private Medical Practitioners’ president Dr Stephen Chow as saying that although the drugs listed on the National Essential Drugs List will be zero-rated, only 208 out of the 2,900 medications listed are of different variations while the rest are more or less the same, and these medicines are not for treatment of critical diseases or complications that may arise from treatment.
And Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia president Dr Jacob Thomas has painted a grim picture, warning that private healthcare costs will increase by 5% following the implementation of GST as doctors working there are not employed by the hospitals but are independently contracted, arguing that outsourced services are deemed taxable by the Customs Department.
But Customs Department director-general Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad has retorted that the price will only rise by another 1% to 2%, as other items taxed by the current service tax system will be exempted.
Similar concerns are raised over movie tickets, whereby movie news portal Cinema Online has speculated that the 6% GST imposed on top of the existing 25% entertainment duties will bring the tax to a whopping 31%, and a price increase on food and drinks.
And the Finance Ministry has announced on Facebook that GST will have an impact on some service charges in banks.
George argues that reactions to these announcements are an indication that Malaysian consumers are not ready to see the GST being implemented in full force and urges the government to push the implementation back another two years until the issues are ironed out.
“The economy is expected to slow down by next year, especially in places like Europe and the US and markets including ours will be affected.
“A lot of people will be affected. The government insists on singing a positive tune, that we will not be affected by these changes… GST can have a major impact on low- and middle-income families.”
If the government is adamant about implementing the GST on April 1 next year, it must be prepared to come forward and tell the truth, that is, whether the GST is the result of the country’s current financial situation.
Speaking in a talk show today:
Debt-ridden Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is slashing 6,000 jobs as part of restructuring efforts unveiled by majority owner, Khazanah.
The airline has also been delisted.
Now all forms and species of corporate predators and cronies are scheming what they can steal and plunder further, from what was once, (pre-81) a very professionally run airline?
But, I am more concerned where is, what was MH370?
Don’t know, cannot tell, still spinning?
And I continue to hear verbal diarrhea as if after all these months – they are still as ‘blur, detached and confused’ as they were on that early morning in March when the plane disappeared!
‘I have never received anything from him – but – I have always been respectful and faithful to him and the office he holds and I feel saddened to see him attacked in such ferocious manner by individuals and groups (using an interesting quote of recent times) – people of low standards, educationally decrepit, introspective, chauvinistic racist thinking and bravery in numbers!
The truth is – these are the unmistakable characteristics of these fringe lunatics attempting to rewrite Malaysia’s history, misinterpret our constitution and destroying the fabric of our country’s society!’ – Datuk Dr Jacob George
Consumerist: Self Serving Idiots Bashing PM Najib!
It is sad to see the concerted manner certain groups have ganged up to admonish and attack premier Najib Tun Razak Malaysia’s sitting Premier!
The truth is they are not strangers to the Premier.
These are individuals and groups who have personally benefited over the ages by the government’s and Najib’s good favor!
When their greed and obsession wants more and it cannot be given – they turn on him as a pack of rapid wolves masquerading as nationalist, race supremacist, freedom fighters, advocates of transparency, good governance and accountability!
The truth is they are all self-serving opportunists – malicious cold blooded takers – racist, fascist and perpetrators of a formula that has gone outdated as with the times and today’s global village of International law!
And I am defending Najib and again, as I consider him a dear friend!
I have never received anything from him – but – I have always been respectful and faithful to him and the office he holds and I feel saddened to see him attacked in such ferocious manner by individuals and groups (using an interesting quote of recent times) – people of low standards, educationally decrepit, introspective, chauvinistic racist thinking and bravery in numbers!
