AIR BAGS – STUPID STATEMENTS EMERGE PRIOR TO STAKEHOLDERS COMMENT!

‘Will this be only for run out of the plant cars or will some politically connected company (s) be now lobbying to be given the contract to install air bags in millions of Malaysian cars which do not have one all under the safety clause?

I am rather surprised that the call has been made in having airbags but there is still no calls to review the quality of cars on Malaysian roads whether they are indeed safe!’ – Dr Jacob George

AIR BAGS – LET’S STOP THE STUPID STATEMENTS PLEASE!

When I was interviewed by Malaysia’s lead vernacular newspaper, I made several observations on the sudden announcement by Transport Minister Kong Cho Ha, that local car manufacturers had agreed in principle to the move to install air bags on cars rolled out of the manufacturing plants!

I felt it was a good move and one that was long overdue!

But the issue here is if the move is to bring down fatalities then we are in for a rude shock!

As common sense will tell you that air bags in themselves will not help bring down the fatality scores and statistics but a comprehensive move to concretize Malaysian drivers on the right and wrong of driving!

Already the Minister has gone on record that this does not involve 4 Wheel drives?

And air bags can also kill!

The pertinent question is again are we planning a policy introduction or switch without addressing all players in the streets of Malaysian roads?

There must first be an educational media blitz and major media industry players must participate in this endeavor.

Just check how Malaysian drivers behave on Singapore roads and the same drivers drive like absolute rascals having no concern for the rights, interests and safety of others on the road!

There must first be a comprehensive study on which cars are to be fitted with these airbags and here we need to perhaps look at the various cc of the vehicles.

If the car itself is manufactured poorly and has a negative safety record and reputation locally and abroad fitting it with an airbag is simply stupid!

And what about the costs?

Will this be only for run out of the plant cars or will some politically connected company (s) be now lobbying to be given the contract to install air bags in millions of Malaysian cars which do not have one all under the safety clause?

I am rather surprised that the call has been made in having airbags but there is still no calls to review the quality of cars on Malaysian roads whether they are indeed safe!

Never mind we are notorious in these things!

I wonder if safety is paramount why until this day we have public transport running free without adhering to the safety belt routine, or to calls to tag speed on public transport and heavy vehicles be they School Busses, lorries, passenger buses, oil tankers, goods transporters or what have you!

So much for priorities!

But what surprised me further were the comment of certain public interests officials whose stupidity was laid bare when they remarked that once implemented there should be ‘proper maintenance of the airbags as these needed to be checked periodically’ –

This is the problem when we make comments on each and every issue under the sun thinking that the portfolio we hold as advocates gives us the right to comment on each and everything ‘under the Malaysian Sun!’

As far as I know airbags needs no maintenance and are replaced only after it is activated after a crash. How to do maintenance, yaar?

Someone just looked a lot more stupid after that comment!
