CONSUMERIST – BUKIT MERAH OR LYNAS FADILLAH MAKING STUPID REMARKS!

Dato Jacob George

‘Incidentally where was this novice when we addressed the Asia Rare Earth issue in the late 70’s to 90’s?

Where was he when we addressed the various health issues and this matter went to court?

Where was he when we documented evidence and presented them to Court and the authorities then?

The court case was itself well published getting rare international exposure in the 80s-90s before the Cyber breakthrough or today’s technology!

And please do stop making stupid statements like the disposal of radioactive waste by a factory owned by Asian Rare Earth there was under control and posed no health threat to the workers and residents there.

As far as the Lynas issue is concerned independent panel, comprising experts in the field or not, it would be political suicide for any government which thinks it is intelligent to attempt to license this venture when the people are against it!’ – Dr Jacob George

CONSUMERIST – BUKIT MERAH OR LYNAS FADILLAH MAKING STUPID REMARKS!

The quality of our elected representatives really sucks!

That includes those appointed Senators!

Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) SHOULD TAKE NOTE!

A fact that becomes an undeniable fact when they open up their mouth and comment on an issue that they have had no personal experience or knowledge with!

Let us look at one such stupid and silly statement!

It comes from Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Fadillah Yusof who is also the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera (PBB) Youth Chief!

He is reported to have said that the allegation that residents in Bukit Merah, Perak, are suffering from health problems, including cancer, as a result of rare earth processing there is inaccurate and obtained from sources which are unreliable.

He added that the health level there was safe from thorium waste disposal or contaminated materials that contained radioactive substances and there was no threat to the public or the environment.

This to me is a very dangerous spin by a political novice who may have yet not set foot at Bukit Merah or for that matter Papan!

Incidentally where this novice was when we addressed the Asia Rare Earth issue in the late 70’s to 90’s?

Where was he when we addressed the various health issues and this matter went to court?

Where was he when we documented evidence and presented them to Court and the authorities then?

The court case was itself well published getting rare international exposure in the 80s-90s before the Cyber breakthrough or today’s technology!

Is the deputy minister very subtly, mischievously and desperately trying to justify the licensing of the controversial and deadly Lynas (M) Sdn Bhd plant in Gebeng, Pahang when the voters and residents have demonstrated against this!

It has also received international reviews!

Common sense Fadillah if it is so safe then ask the Australians to remove all waste and ship them back to Australia for disposal!

And please do stop making stupid statements like the disposal of radioactive waste by a factory owned by Asian Rare Earth there was under control and posed no health threat to the workers and residents there.

As one voter remarked –

‘Please ask the Deputy Minister from Sarawak to visit the special store built for the radio-active waste (result of Asian Rare Earth) near Papan, Perak!

It can be can be reached from Ipoh-Lumut highway near Lahat.’

He continued:

‘If there was no danger why did they take the trouble to build such a place, away from populated areas?

Even the traffic lights are adjusted to take into account no vehicles are supposed to go through the access road.’

But since this deputy seems a bit blur on the events then let me take him through it.

By the way deputy minister Fadillah if you were still not born then or a child let me take you through this episode that I remember with personal experience as I was then attached to both Consumer Association of Penang (CAP) and its sister organization Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM)!

1984:

6700 residents of Papan (16 kms from Ipoh), where ARE is dumping its waste, signed a petition against it to the government while up to 3000 take part in several demonstrations and a hunger strike!

That was not all – as – environmentalists; radiation experts, physicists and industrial waste experts from abroad visited the site and declared it unsafe with radiation up to 800 times the accepted levels.

Still with me deputy minister – good!

In 1985:

Residents of Bukit Merah obtained a stop work order from the High Court.

In 1986:

Shockingly but no surprise that Malaysia’s Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) deems the site safe, after an ARE clean up, as only some parts have more than acceptable radiation level.

In 1987:

AELB issues a license to ARE to resume work, to demonstrations involving up to 10,000 residents. More than 20, including women, were injured in one incident while 60 were detained by police. None were charged.

Eight residents take legal action against ARE, and up to 3000 marched 8 kms to court on the last day of proceedings.

More than 100 were in the next month detained under the Internal Security Act and released after two months.

1989:

Two children aged five and 11 and a 19-year-old man were diagnosed with acute leukemia.

Other cases like brain cancer, septicemia and other complications are reported.

Seemingly healthy children exposed to radiation were tested and found to be less healthy than those in Carey Island, although the children of Bukit Merah were better nourished.

According to 1986 statistics, Bukit Merah should have only one case of leukemia in thirty years. By the time the plant shuts down, eight cases would have been diagnosed. Seven patients will not survive.

There are also reported cases of birth deformities involving children of workers at the plant.

As far as the Lynas issue is concerned independent panel, comprising experts in the field or not, it would be political suicide for any government which thinks it is intelligent to attempt to license this venture when the people are against it!

Lynas should bite the dust – period!

Going ahead also incidentally rubbishes the much spin – Rakyat Didahulukan, Pencapaian Diutamakana slogan!

Our campaign against RACISM of all forms!
