Now more than a decade later – I am aware that politicians are notorious for their spin, lies, and hypocrisy, frequently making their profession and friendship distasteful to the people they represent and to dear faithful friends like me!
The fact remains, each and everyone in public say that we want senators who are intellectually capable of debate, discussions, hold their own, proactive and driving change but the reality is the next time there is a vacant slot the political machinery or the party president gives it away to one of his party faithful or ‘retiring old fart!’
Never mind, whether that person is a total wash out, a non performer and one who stands out not for their track record of unfaithful multi tasked service but because that person is a bootlicker par excellent!
A friend just called me moments ago shocked at how low the Najib administration can go!
He shockingly said – ‘Jay – I thought Senatorship is reserved for individuals of high integrity who can contribute to nation building?
Is the BN government practicing the opposite! Any individual who had directly associated with DSAI and now turning against him is entitled for appointment as senator in BN bolehland?’– Dr Jacob George
CONSUMERIST: SENATOR SELECTIONS A DISGRACE AND JOKE!
I do not deny that several powerful politicians on both sides of the political divide are my friends!
I have been a good and decent friend to all of them!
I have been there in both their ‘ups and downs’ and most importantly, when they were challenged, acting as a behind the scene mediator!
I can remember at least how I repeatedly came to the defence of one very powerful party president, not once, but several times in the public space!
I had put my head repeatedly on the chopping block in the court of public opinion to defend him!
And I believe he liked me too, but perhaps, just perhaps, my truthfulness was a burden too much to bear, in the political circle!
And I recollect how I was advised that in one by election not ‘buy election’ my name was nominated by the intelligence fraternity as an ideal candidate – young, vibrant, well known, articulate, had a track record and most importantly, was well known in that northern constituency and had the bonus of having the ‘widow of the incumbent’ willing to walk along side me!
But no, I was told the preference was someone else ‘much3 older’ – who at the middle of the campaign was told – ‘stay home’ while others canvassed for that candidate!
He was routed and the said party earned the wrath of the political leadership in the center!
When I asked the person whether this was true – he had the audacity to tell me “ I did not know you were interested!’
Now, more than a decade later – I am aware that politicians are notorious for their spin, lies, and hypocrisy, frequently making their profession and friendship distasteful to the people and friends they have, especially friends like me!
I have always felt that truthfulness should not be compromised and it is an admirable quality that is expected from our politicians and friends but today truly lacking!
And how does this work out on the whole question of appointments of senators in Malaysia?
I have written several articles over this the last 15 years!
And as such, I cannot but support the views of my learned dear friend from the South, Dewan Negara president Abu Zahar Nika Ujang who stated quite rightly that the Dewan Negara should not be a place for seat warmers and fillers!
I would go further and add that they should also not be the fillers for those who have being rejected by voters and collateral damage of general elections!
And the awful undeniable truth is the Dewan Negara has always been the dumping ground for failed politicians, a giveaway, a handout, or bartering tool to those who have pleased the powers that be in party leadership!
It has gone to political and business cronies, runners, bouncers, old farts, to appease race quotas within a political party, or hierarchy or as a gesture to win over stubborn resistance to one’s leadership!
If one thought there is going to be reforms it was again dashed when several new appointments were certainly handouts rather than to create a political vibrant Dewan Negara!
And it has lived up to the tag that it is really a dumping ground for ‘political junks!’
The fact remains each and everyone in public say that we want senators who are intellectually capable of debate, discussions, hold their own, proactive and driving change but the reality is the next time there is a vacant slot the political machinery or the party president gives it away to one of his party faithful or retiring old fart!
Never mind whether that person is a total wash out, a non performer and one who stands out not for their track record of unfaithful multi tasked service but because that person is a bootlicker par excellent!
And it is sad that this is a practice from all in party leadership!
