Consumerist: Breaking News! – Whose ‘Salim’ And What’s His Role In The 500 Mini-Markets That Threatens Malaysian Sundry Shop Operators?

Several weeks ago, this blog carried the news that a Foreign Hypermarket Conglomerate About to Kill Malaysian Papa & Mama Shops With Their Mini Market Venture Nationwide!

This was also brought up by me at the KPDNKK ministry meeting between consumer groups, NGOs and the newly minted minister and his deputy!

According to my intelligence assets on the ground a foreign owned hypermarket is about to set up mini markets throughout the country!

The model, drawings are all ready and so is the cash to finance the venture!

Their only problem was Jacob George knew about it!

Now our intelligence investigations also threw up various names and one among them, was one ‘Salim?”

Now who is this ‘Salim’ as this names keeps coming up aplenty in Selangor land deals, reverse takeovers, an attempt to take over chairmanship of a public listed company and of an alleged relationship with a former disgraced menteri besar of Selangor?

And what is his role in the foundation laying of this project which is a threat to all sundry schools in Malaysia?

As I stated, this particular foreign owned controls three other popular brand outlets in the country.

IF this is allowed by my ministry it will mean the end of all ‘Papa & Mama shops’ – the sundry shops as we know them!

I am aware there was a manipulation through a back door weakness in the guidelines!

This is a travesty of justice because only recently these small outlets were encouraged to adopt the TUKAR program where a loan of RM50,000 to RM70,000.00 was utilized to refurbish the outlets to give them a new outlook.

What I cannot understand and I hope the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism does come out with an answer why many hypermarkets are not following guidelines previously agreed upon that they cannot set up business in any floor space below 30,000 and be outside the 5km range between hypermarkets?

According to my intelligence assets on the ground again in both the Pavilion and at Hartamas, I am made to understand that the space taken falls below 30,000 sg ft?

IF this is indeed TRUE then someone is again sleeping on the job and should be sacked!

IF Malaysian brand of Papa & Mama shops is threatened we will have a major crisis on our hands and therefore the ministry (KPDNKK) must immediately warn hypermarkets especially this Hong Kong – South African mix that we will not approve nor tolerate any such opening!

Morally why should we allow foreign brands to manipulate our markets, take the profits out of the country and destroy our house brands?

Previously, I had already alerted my minister about this matter!

I told him that something stinks here and I am about to find out more and update him accordingly!
