‘First let me remind Bangladesh, that Malaysia is a signatory to the Istanbul Declaration of Organ Transplants and secondly, we are also working very hard to come up with a bill on Organ Transplants!
I am proud to say that CASSA is working very closely with the leadership at the Ministry of Health led by Director General Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman, his team of policymakers, clinicians and enforcement division to conscientize consumers here and make certain that our country will not be aiding, abetting and carrying out any illegal organ transplants!’ – Dr Jacob George
CONSUMERIST: ORGAN TRAFFICKING DON’T ACCUSE SHOW PROOF BANGLADESH TOLD!
If the statement was made by any other quarter, it may have been more convincing, but no, we are shockingly told by Bangladeshi police not by Interpol that Malaysia is among several countries in the radar of the Bangladeshi police who are on the trail of an international syndicate linked to illegal kidney trade across several Southeast Asian countries!
I nearly fell off my chair laughing that suddenly of all countries, the ‘corrupt to the core’ Bangladesh now attempts to spin out as if they were a nation of ‘Mahatmas and Mother Theresa!’
A statement coming from a country known to be up to their necks in corrupt practices cannot but be taken with a spoonful of salt!
I should know better having dealt with their officials, politicians manpower agents and others where their exploited manpower industry is concerned!
How they and their Malaysia’s infamous politicians, their runners and others shared a sine biotic relationship involving millions of ringgit in commissions and kickbacks involving Bangladesh workers!
That resulted in unsuspecting workers who had paid huge commissions thinking they are coming to high paid jobs given the run a round once they have arrived!
Worst to be living under bridges, rivers and dependent on the goodwill of social workers for their meals!
While those who made millions are busy purchasing their luxury cars, million ringgit homes, new wives, and whatever that easy money received can be spent on!
If you think I am being too hard I will stand down!
But let us look at their statement which says that their investigators have identified a reputed international hospital with branches in key regions and capitals, including a hospital in Selangor, Malaysia and that their initial investigations have revealed that donors from remote villages in Bangladesh were flown to the regions to sell their kidneys.
It does not end there that eight people have been arrested in connection with luring the poor illiterate victims overseas for that purpose.
They say that they ‘have information this (international) hospital has branches in India, Malaysia and Indonesia’ and that they ‘have launched a massive crackdown on the illegal kidney trade spanning across several Southeast Asian countries!’
They went on saying that an agency in Dhaka is involved in the illegal kidney transplant. Many poor, illiterate and people with high borrowings (debts) were taken abroad where the kidney transplant is done.
Finally a name is mentioned and even that of a Joypurhat Superintendent of Police, Mozammel Haque who did not confirm but made a stupid statement in a telephone interview that:
“It is possible they have visited these countries,” and that each ‘victim was paid between US$2,000 (RM6,000) and US$3,000 (RM9,000) for a kidney’ but was unsure how much the organ was priced in the black market.
We are however told that so far at least seven cases of illegal sale of kidney have surfaced in Joypurhat – located in northern Bangladesh – where largely impoverished communities survive on seasonal agricultural crops.
That numerous documents related to the unlawful trade were seized from the suspects, adding that more details were expected to be unearthed.
And finally what took the cake was the stupid statement that this ‘is a complex investigation’ and that they ‘are hoping to identify more suspects involved in the racket,”
But Bangladesh media reported that at least 100 people had fallen prey to the international syndicate, which also involved medical experts!
These reports were carried by three mainstream newspapers and brought to my attention since I head the NGO Task force on Illegal Organ Trafficking!
First, if there was any truth to these allegations the information should be sent to our Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Health and our Police force!
That would have been diplomatically and politically correct!
Or they could have alerted Interpol and they would have done the necessary so that this matter would be on the international radar!
But no, those formalities were strangely bypassed and an ordinary police officer below a pay grade decided to make a statement that had international implications and slander!
Yes, I am upset so will be all Malaysians when an unsubstantiated statement and an insinuation is made regarding our country Malaysia and hospitals in Selangor, my home state are conduits of international organ trafficking and exploitation!
First let m,e remind Bangladesh that Malaysia is a signatory to the Istanbul Declaration of Organ Transplants and secondly, we are also working very hard to come up with a bill on Organ Transplants!
I am proud to say that CASSA is working very closely with the leadership at the Ministry of Health led by Director General Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman, his team of policymakers, clinicians and enforcement division to conscientize consumers here and make certain that our country will not be aiding, abetting and carrying out any illegal organ transplants!
On a policy level, organs transplants are only through 1. cadeveric, 2. blood relations and 3. in very special cases after a comprehensive and intensive review by a task force IF the donation is by a unrelated third party!
IF indeed there is evidence, please revert to us with the documents so that a much needed probe can be undertaken but do not spin the news, do not allege wrongdoing, do not insinuate when there is inconclusive evidence!
Malaysia is not China, Mexico, Iran, Israel, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines or some South American backyard!
And therefore – I urge the DG of Health to immediately lodge a Police Report and also register our protest with the Bangladesh government advising them to initiate a comprehensive investigation to absolve Malaysia of any wrong doing and a unwarranted smear!
