Worst, only an idiot will now try to answer irritated Malaysian consumers who will ask was the abolition of the RM551.25 million sugar subsidy to assists sugar companies chalk up to RM1 billion in profits?
Consumerist: Pak Jib Urged To End The Sugar Monopoly Now!
It is not tenable any longer!
You cannot ask the consumers to pay more for a consumer item by removing subsidies but maintain the fence so that competition is non-existent, fettered and cronies continue to rake in the billions!
You cannot fool the Malaysian consumer any longer by half baked and contentious medical statements alone for they know that the liberalization of the sugar market would ensure that its price remained competitive for consumers.
My dear friend for over 3 decades and my former minister, Shahrir Samad put it rather eloquently when he said:
“If we no longer provide subsidy for sugar, we acknowledge that it is no longer a controlled item and therefore we should also remove the import restrictions. This is so that we can obtain sugar from other nearby sources, such as Thailand, for the domestic price to become more competitive,” he
He pointed out an earlier difficulty with cement and steel which caused havoc in the country before which balanced out when the market was liberalized!
He pointed out that when cement and steel were removed from the controlled items list, their markets also liberalized and the prices balanced out.
And this is sugar which is close to the hearts, mind and taste buds of Malaysians unlike cement and steel!
This touches and affects across the wide political spectrum!
So the pertinent question is why is the Competition Act so impotent when it comes now to the sugar monopoly?
