CONSUMERIST: TELCOS 6% SHOW ITS ARROGANCE AND GOVT PARALYSIS!

‘If you were one of the many trusting persons like me in Malaysia who thought that the Competition Act 2010 and the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Acts 2010 will completely change the way business is conducted in Malaysia you will be found wrong and ashamed!

And you are not wrong to hold a position that the Competition Act 2010 took 15 years to be implemented in Malaysia with major concessions to certain sectors prior and in my mind will be another toothless tiger in the long arsenal of Malaysian laws despite whatever claims are made by its proponents and beneficiaries!

But that is how things work in Malaysia, a fact, I found out one morning after serving as a Consumerist for 37 years independent of the government and its allocation, perks and handouts!’ – Dr Jacob George

CONSUMERIST: TELCOS 6% SHOW ITS ARROGANCE AND GOVT PARALYSIS!

If you were one of the many trusting persons like me in Malaysia who thought that the Competition Act 2010 and the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Acts 2010 will completely change the way business is conducted in Malaysia you will be found wrong and ashamed!

But that is how things work in Malaysia, a fact, I found out one morning after serving as a Consumerist for 37 years independent of the government and its allocation, perks and handouts!

Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2010 another legislation which was to replace the Price Control Act (1946) was amended to include anti-profiteering measures as it was receiving complaints pertaining to profiteering activities by businesses and to ensure that businesses did not jack-up their prices excessively.

But this has not worked either as Malaysian consumers brace themselves for more price increases for goods and services!

Certain sectors have already started and the announcement and one such came from the mobile operators who have announced that they will start implementing the 6% service tax on prepaid reload/top ups starting 15 September 2011. The new move also applies on purchase of new prepaid starter packs as well

Vulgarly the telcos are defining it as a consumption tax and chargeable to the customer, as provided for in the service tax laws.

In other words a consumer who purchases a RM10 prepaid reload will need to pay RM10.60, with the 60 sen being the service tax!

Is this not vulgar, is this not profiteering and a clear indication of a collusion between cartels?

The next few weeks we can expect other groups to come up with similar innovations that will hurt the already bleeding consumers in Malaysia!

What is the justification of the increase?

What is the morality behind this except it being one of vulgar greed of a market situation?

Not – that they are already collected upfront monies from an estimated 17 million locals and another 5 million foreigners both legal and illegal is not addressed?

Was there discussion, presentations to a group of stakeholders, or issues addressed before the announcement that has received strong brickbats and backlash from a wide group of Malaysians and others?

At the time of writing CASSA is supported by another 27 NGOs and groups from a wide spectrum across the country to initiate a massive demonstration and boycott of the telcos!

The truth is, we have fallen so far from the tree and political obsession and greed has go unaddressed and unfettered that today it has encompassed too wide a spectrum that we are all fighting a losing battle.

Aided and abetted by brain dead politicians and policymakers, more interested in protecting their own turf and that of their cronies and cosmetic and toothless legislation and commissions which are more for cosmetic exhibitions rather than holistic change that we can believe in!
