GETTING TO THE TRUTH MATTERS SAYS MALAYSIA ASEAN APEC LEAD CONSUMERIST & DIPLOMACY ICON PROF DR JACOB GEORGE

(Focus On Parliament & Public Policy)

I am still shell shocked at what I witnessed firsthand at Parliament yesterday July 18th.

There was an issue at end which lost its significance when a member of parliament used an un-parliamentarian remark against his political opponent!

The difference was that this time around the MP who made that remark was part of the political grouping come together that won more seats at the GE14 and thus became government of the day and his opponent the former occupants of the privilege now sitting in the opposition benches!

Pandemonium broke lose as fellow MP of both political divide took to the floor seeking the attention and action of the speaker my very dear friend the former deputy Penang Chief Minister who is a gentle person and a first time deputy speaker in a hall where there were both seasoned MP’s and first timers!

It was embarrassing to see both behave in a manner embarrassing and undignified!

As I watched the to and fro sitting with my dear friends from the media who turned to me and asked what is a quick fix – I replied that my dear friend the MP for Bukit Gelugor should withdraw and apologize to allow the dignity and decorum of the house to be restored!

He did not!

I tried to speak to him during the break after all I know his family very well and his caring and loving father was always one who had encouraged me as I read law in the 80s in the UK and worked with a very powerful consumer NGO in Penang and the Prime Minister’s department!

But Bukit Gelugor after greeting me moved fast preventing me from saying what I needed to.

I knew what will happen when parliamentary proceedings commenced post lunch if he did not apologize!

As I anticipated Bukit Gelugor MP was ejected from the Dewan Rakyat by the new speaker, Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof, for refusing to retract his statement describing Umno Youth members as “gangsters (samseng).”

One of the points I had raised with the media when they were with me was that the present newly minted government must learn to behave like a government of the day as they are no more the opposition and thus their behavior, decorum and reaction to the issues of the day which includes the attempts by others to provoke them must be in a manner befitting the office they now hold!

In the last two months over since May 10th – far too many statements have been released which either shows chameleon attributes at least from one rather impatient politician and of others saying things that are controversial and untrue as far as issues and policy deliberations are concerned let alone the total absence of any form of consultation with pillars and accomplished public opinions shapers and movers like me with the over 40 years of experience I bring with me!

As I stated to the media – we can wait as based on what is happening the anger towards the allegations of grandiose corruption is still over-bearing, and distorts honest, truthful thinking and the present politicians in power seem to be spinning exposures far too quick raising the benchmark and bar of expectations that may not materialize!

At the end of the day if the present corruption and abuse allegations cannot be sustained and proceedings are thrown out as baseless and with over powering gaps to raise reasonable doubt – what happens?

That circus is over and reality bites!

Then, it is the economy stupid not divertional tactics on alleged corruption, and issues of bread and butter and not another national car please or the grandiose projects of old that the ordinary Malaysians struggling are clamoring for!

It is paramount that the minimum wage issue, of undocumented Malaysians, polarization, bread and butter issues, human rights, the ugly face of racial and religious baiting and of terrorism that is going to need fixing among the business, education and other public policy initiatives!

Today we have weapons of mass distortion and deception at large from the social and online media with their packs of ‘rabid dog’ like followers and cyber goons and troopers who abuse the comments columns and distorts truth!

We need to address this immediately.

I say this because getting to the truth matters in going forward as a nation and a Malaysian community!
