‘But the US has always been a caring, sensitive and dedicated partner and friend in assisting and sacrificing to help in global crisis for decades!’
SIMPLY UNTENABLE US HALT OF AID TO PALESTINIAN REFUGEE AGENCY UNRWA SAYS MALAYSIA ASEAN APEC LEAD CONSUMERIST PROF DR JACOB GEORGE
These days under the present US President’s watch and policy deliberations and utterances, nothing surprises me!
No dignity, decorum, just loud mouth fascist utterances!
You may accuse the same about my country Malaysia – despite our recent GE14 and promises of hope made – we still have debates over sacred cows and policies of race, religion and seditious speeches aflame and are frequently abused to high heavens as politicians use and recycle them to gain traction politically and in political party elections for a ‘leg up’ – putting the nation at risk in a fast changing global world!
But the US has always been a caring, sensitive and dedicated partner and friend in assisting and sacrificing to help in global crisis for decades!
Their young died on many of our shores to defend democracy!
However this is fast changing under the Trump administration!
And here in this latest flawed and despicable move the United States has cut funding to a UN agency that supports Palestinian refugees, saying its business model and fiscal practices were an “irredeemably flawed operation.”
We are told that the US administration has carefully reviewed the issue and determined that the United States will not make additional contributions to UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency)!
It did not end there but inexplicably UNRWA is accused of endlessly and exponentially expanding community of entitled beneficiaries and been in unsustainable and in crisis mode for many years!
My dear diplomatic friends tell me that UNRWA provides services to about 5 million Palestinian refugees.
That is almost the population of certain sovereign states which have membership to the United Nations!
The 68-year-old agency UNRWA, I am advised provides services to about 5 million Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and the West Bank and Gaza and with this cut put in a precarious position, are they not?
Is the present US administration devoid of sympathy, a moral duty as those in this group receiving assistance who are actually descendants from individuals who left their homes during the 1948-49 war that followed the founding of the State of Israel!
A spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas denounced the decision as “a flagrant assault against the Palestinian people and a defiance of UN resolutions.”
As an individual involved in global crisis issues and policy deliberations, I cannot but super agree, as I appeal on their behalf for a withdrawal of the said decision and continuance of the aid to a community of people under siege from time immemorial!
