Consumerist: DOE Website Classic Example Of Incompetence And Stupidity!
Are we really serious about the haze?
By the way several members of the public called me to ask how accurate is the information given at the Department of Environment’s website?
I visit the website several times in a day and more often than not, the 11am API readings is not updated until 3pm in the afternoon and the 5pm API readings do not come online until 8 or 9pm or sometimes the next day.
Very often the information is not updated until the next day!
So I cannot but wonder IF our ‘Berkhidmat untuk Negara’ DOE staff are serious about getting information out?
Are they not aware that that website becomes a barometer in decisions made in protecting school going children?
Not just that senior citizens and others monitor the reading update to decide on their outdoor activities.
Even the first reading at 7am does not appear on time, what more can I say? So what is the use of having a website when it’s the typical civil service mentality about doing things on time?
So I cannot but be flabbergasted that there is a statement that all schools located in areas where the API reading is 300 and above must close and others with API reading below 250 should stay open.
What stupidity is this?
Worst that the state education department has to refer to the ministry in areas where the API is between 250 and 300.
Now what ever happened to empowerment?
If this was the decision after the National Security Council under the Prime Minister’s Department met it is a stupid move as they should have looked at the statistics coming out from public and private hospitals and clinics on the upsurge in respiratory illness and attacks!
After I posted updates in my blog at http://www.drjacobgeorge.com/ and my facebook update I am informed by medical doctor friends and specialist that the number of people seeking treatment for respiratory problems has doubled and the people have been advised to stay indoors and wear masks!
I am told that patients with asthma, bronchitis and lung diseases are the ones who will suffer the most during the haze. No specific medication could be a magic bullet during this season, however, taking precautionary measures is always better than cure!
Interestingly friends in three hospitals – Sg. Buloh Hospital, Prince Court Medical Centre and INS Specialist Center have recorded a 50% increase in the number of patients seeking treatment for pulmonary diseases.
As a parent as long as I find that the air index is high and I smell something burning, my eyes burn, it shows that the level of concentration of the smoke is quite high – I will say nay to my children going to school – so get indoors and those ill, have history of asthma, other ailments, children, senior citizens, pregnant mothers are all vulnerable!
