TRUST ISSUES IN MALAYSIA – MALAYSIA ASEAN APEC LEAD CONSUMERIST PROF DR JACOB GEORGE THANKS HRH TUNKU ZAIN AL-ABIDIN TUANKU MUHRIZ FOR FEELING THE PULSE OF THE NATION

I was delighted to hear HRH Tunku Zain Al-Abidin Tuanku Muhriz go on record that currently we are experiencing a super lack of trust in the country’s institutions.

The Negeri Sembilan prince was right on cue that over the past year, questions of leadership, accountability and transparency have accompanied decisions related to the tackling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The pandemic challenged and tested our claims of immunity, our standards, our response and over-all the resolve in addressing, managing and defeating the threat!

It was an acid test that we failed.

It challenged previously held mantras that we have an access of doctors and frontliners.

That we had the needed leadership who will not fall over each other and policies in place.

The pandemic as we know had crossed all barriers of political parties, race, religion, and virtually dealt a blow across crippling the nation!

There were no sacred cows as everyone was affected.

Our initial mute reaction and subsequent reckless and U-turns caused us severely.

Our kid glove approach to the recalcitrant communities and the cluster spreaders was embarrassingly seen.

To date there has been 667,876 infected and 4069 fatalities.

The crippling of the economy, the paralysis of a community social movement, massive loss of jobs, business affected with those who never had a lifestyle of seeking handouts or freebies from the government now raising their arms in defeat and the trauma of facing rising debts.

The U-turns, abuse of the SOPs by politicians and celebrities well connected to power and wealth circles, hypocrisy, double-standards, queue jumping the bureaucratic and political abuse of a vaccination roll-out was all just far too much for the ordinary folks.

In my entire 45 years of volunteerism, consumer advocacy and addressing public policy initiatives and deliberations I had never seen such colossal hypocrisy and double standards.

We saw how our politicians failed miserably to rise above personal interest, political parties and personal considerations instead of the nation and its people under siege.

We saw the total disconnect with the pain, reality on the ground and suffering of the people.

It was obvious there were none to show true leadership, capability, ability, vision and depth of understanding of the present situation to lead and console us.

Sadly, it was all about political power and how to retain it at any costs?

So HRH Tunku Zain, the founding president of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), said quite correctly that it is important for national institutions to be backed by public confidence and a strong constitutional foundation.

He is certainly right that these are things that are important for stability, prosperity, and happiness!

That is why the challenge for us is to restore hope in the people, uphold the Federal Constitution, our system of parliamentary democracy and make certain that all our institutions are squeaky clean to get us out of the current challenge from all sides.

And the need to remove those who lust for political power, greed,  untruths, the calculative disregard for fair-play, justice, the manipulation of race relations and issues, of faith!

It is time for accountability, good governance and truth!

It is time we addressed holistically to pave a way forward for a nation that once was a beacon for others in the region and the global stage!

May the ALMIGHTY intervene and help us through.
